Miral smiled triumphantly as she looked at her reflection in
the full length mirror that hung next to her bed. She had spent the past two
hours getting ready for her date with Jenny. It was a special date as it marked
the one year anniversary her Mother’s and Seven’s wedding and more importantly
her first kiss with Jenny.
Miral glanced at the door and sighed as she heard her Mother
call her name once more. Her Mother and Seven had asked to speak to her about something;
Miral cringed as she remembered the last talk they had had. Apparently making
out, while riding up and down in turbolifts wasn’t appropriate behaviour. Miral
chuckled as she recalled some of the shocked faces of people who had entered
the turbolift; Jenny’s mum had even fainted.
Miral went back to checking her appearance once more, her
hair which was freshly cut looked good, it was a more severe cut that she usually
had. The hair was cut shooter in the back then it was in the front, causing the
hair to slope in two sharp points that stopped level with her chin. Miral liked it, it made her look older than
fifteen.
Again her Mother’s voice rang out and with a sigh Miral turned
from her personal inspection and headed to the living area.
When she exited her room Miral saw her Mother seated upon
the armchair closest to the kitchen area, with Seven standing behind her with
her hand upon her shoulder.
It was a familiar pose that usually spoke of some punishment
and it instantly put Miral on guard. The last time they had struck the pose Miral
had ended up confined to her room for a week because of a stunt she had pulled
on the Captain involving some of Neelix’s Leola root stew. Her Mother had
threatened to skin her alive her she messed with the replicator’s again.
“So what did you want?” Miral asked as she brushed an
imaginary piece of lint of the shoulder of her favourite red tunic.
“Sit down baby.” B’Elanna said as she looked up as Seven and
smiled.
“Is this going to take long?” Miral asked “it's just that I have
a big date with Jenny!”
B’Elanna rolled her eyes, “For Khaless Sake Miral, just sit
down!”
“Don’t shout at me.” Miral responded as she unconsciously
did what her Mother requested.
“I didn’t. We are trying to talk to you and all your interested
in is getting out of the door.” B’Elanna huffed.
“Well what did you want?” Miral asked with a small frown.
“Well it’s just that...” B’Elanna heisted and looked up at Seven
once more.
A horrific thought suddenly struck Miral, “You not getting
divorced are you?”
“Never.” Seven swore instantly.
Miral breathed a sigh of relief, she didn’t know what she
would do if her Mother and Seven split up. Miral frowned once more as she tried
to think about what her parents were trying to tell her.
“Good, so what’s this important news that is making me late?”
“Well... Seven and I...” B’Elanna hesitated again.
Miral watched as Seven gently squeezed her Mother’s shoulder.
“What your Mother is having difficulty in informing you is
that, she is pregnant.” Seven said a small lick of the lips gave away her
nervousness.
“Pregnant?” Miral asked as her jaw dropped open slightly. She
couldn't quite believe what she was hearing. They had only been married a year
and now her Mother was pregnant.
“Yes I’m pregnant.” B’Elanna nodded as she smiled brightly
at her daughter.
Miral pushed herself up to her feet, “You’re having a baby?”
Miral stared at the floor; they hadn’t even told her they were
trying for one.
“Yes.”Both B’Elanna and Seven said at the same time.
Miral’s mind was running away with her. She had thought it
was something bad, now she wasn’t quite sure what she thought, or felt.
“Miral say something.”B’Elanna pleaded as she stood and
moved towards Miral her hand outstretched.
Catching her Mother’s movement Miral snapped out of her
thoughts and moved just out of reach. She regretted causing the flash of pain
that entered her Mother’s eyes as she avoided her touch.
“I have to go; I don’t want to be late for my date.” Miral said
as she turned.
“Miral wait!”B’Elanna cried.
“I have to go.”
Miral quickly made her way from her quarters. She could
still hear her Mother calling to her when she entered the turbolift.
