Life Is Good To Me Sometimes

So, here's my life. It is full of cool experiences.

Cool experience #1 - Creating/directing an original musical revue of Harvard songwriters.

This was the show I spent the three weeks of the semester working on. It was called "The Other Side Of The World," it featured five of my songs (and 18 by other people), it was awesome. Too bad you guys couldn't see it... OH WAIT. YOU TOTALLY CAN, BECAUSE IT'S ALL ON YOUTUBE!

Seriously, watch it, it's awesome. One of the most fun (and lowkey) experiences I've ever had doing theater. If you don't have time to watch the whole show (it's only like 65 minutes long) just check out the songs I wrote.

Cool experience #2 - Getting a fellowship to study at NYU Tisch Graduate Musical Theater Writing program over the summer.

So yeah, here's the big news - the Office For The Arts here at good ol' Harvard gave me some money to live/study in NYC for a month this summer. I'll be in Manhattan, living in an NYU dorm and taking part in a musical theater writing workshop through Tisch. Also, just experiencing the city - a real life city, as opposed to the suburban wasteland of Metro Detroit or the ubercollegetown of Cambridge. I cannot express how excited/terrified I am about this. Hopefully, this'll a) prepare me to live in NYC post-college, and b) make me some connections in the theater world.

Cool experience #3 - Participating in a display of unity and respect to protest the Westboro Baptist Church

If you haven't heard of the WBC, look 'em up - they're the people behind godhatesfags.com, godhatesamerica.com, and, amusingly, godhatessweeden.com. They are perhaps the worst people in the world (Fred Phelps, their leader, was one of the characters I played in The Laramie Project earlier this year). They came to protest outside of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, a local public school, so the Harvard Dems and the Queer Students Association helped organize a counter-protest.

I have never seen so many people from so many different walks of life coming together to demonstrate against hate. There were us intellectual liberal types, some of the crazy Cambridge queer community (including some awesomely butch lesbians and a 70 year old MTF transwoman) and a very diverse group of high school students. There were probably close to 500 of us (and only 6 of them), and we raised over three grand to support the CRLS Gay-Straight Alliance. Easily one of the coolest things I've ever done.

In other news, I am taking six classes, which is ridiculous. But I really like all of them, so that's good. Speaking of class, I have a presentation to write. If you've ever wanted to know how Der Stein Der Weisen compares with Die Zauberflöte, lemme know, cuz I'll be able to talk to you at length about it.
