12 Days of Decluttering - A Challenge to Myself

Dec 08, 2008 14:53

I battle with guilt and internal unrest over the clutter and general disorganization in my life. I'm definitely not the worst when it comes to clutter. I'm not a hoarder (although sometimes the specter of being one of those people featured on Oprah is a good reality check for me). I've never been good at being especially organized and tidy. I ( Read more... )

This is something I battle with too, and I wish you the best of luck with it.

My major project for December/January is decluttering. I want to completely overhaul my closet and my crafting stuff, and get rid of everything that isn't necessary. Big task, but I think I'll feel really good when it's all done...

I've gotten much better the past few years about not accumulating things in general. But there's a lot lingering from the past. And it is a struggle to overcome my natural impulses. Frankly, I'd be ok with not putting away my clean clothes for the rest of my life, generally, if I could just get under control my habit of tossing non-actionable paperwork (including junk mail) in a pile on the table, then moving that pile to a box when I want to clear the space, and then moving that box under the desk when it is full, and then starting a new box...

That sounds WAY too much like my paperwork system. I'm still trying to move past the "no! I might need that!" impulse when it comes to, say, electric bills from three years and two apartments ago...

I will not be surprised to be shredding bills and bank statements from 10 years ago once I move on to the older boxes.

Man oh man, do I need to try this. Logistically, it'll have to wait until I graduate / move, but seriously: long overdue. When I finally ebay most of my Nikes, I'll know I've made real progress.

ebaying things is one of the major obstacles I'm not looking forward to, not necessarily because of the emotional severing of a relationship to an item, but the logistics of it all (deciding how to list some things, determining packaging and shipping, etc).
Some things, though, I'll have to try to offload through craigslist or freecycle.

Same here. If I took a photo of my desk right now, I just might cry. Also, the crazy amount of photos - both printed and in iPhoto - that I have done nothing with. Did I mention I still have to finish my wedding album? LAZY I AM. I've been reading Unclutterer to get inspired. We were watching this documentary on a monastery (mostly no talking - just silence and chanting) - and I have a secret desire to live like a monk - with few possessions. Must get on that!

I'm not even going to touch the idea of organizing photos or things yet. That is way more advanced than my current goals.
