How we went out to buy ice cream and came home with Gelato

Jun 30, 2011 04:46

We were down to our last five dollars and there was an outcry for ice cream. My intrepid wyfe and myself headed out to go fetch the desired product and decided to take the longer way, heading to a late night grocery rather than to the Walgreens we usually go to grab that sort of thing.

We slowed down to let a tiny dog cross the street, and once he made it safely across, he looked up at our van and looked lost, forlorn and more than a little tired.

Of course, I stopped and Ardyn rolled down her window and spoke to him, which made his little tail wag furiously and he came right up to the van door. She got out and petted him and then picked him up, to which he buried his nose in her shirt and sighed hugely. When she showed him to me, he lifted his head and wanted to be petted.

We sat there a while looking him over, no collar, no tags, still intact, with a small cut on his foreleg and in good shape, albeit a bit dusty and with obviously sore paws. We think he'd been outside at least a day but probably no more than two or three.

We have made up the graphic for Found Dog posters, will be submitting a found dog report to the paper and the animal control people, as well as getting him checked for microchip and anything serious. For now, he is comfortable in a large puppy crate we happened to have, with a pillow and a little nest worth of clothing we were going to throw out, and in the garage until tomorrow morning. Tomorrow, there will be a walk around the neighborhood, and putting up posters, but tonight, at least he is inside, warm, dry, fed and has a nice big bowl of water.

If no one shows up to claim him, we'll work out what to do next.

Oh, and he loves orange sherbet

Meet Gelato.
