So I had a second interview with an organization called the Archaeological Conservancy today and I was offered the position. I am gonna take it and I am really excited. The organization is a non-profit that purchases Archaeological and Historical sites for preservation. I was amazed to find a job that combined my degree in Anthro and my

Paul's afraid to live in Columbus, but he'll move to Newark? Oy vey.
You guys should take a trip up here at some point and we can give you a tour of the neighborhoods.
I've owned a huge old center hall foursquare in Olde Towne for 14 years now. I have had few actual crime problems (apart from having to decide whether to kill a drunk who almost came through my front window), but there is drug dealing and street prostitution and muggings and burglaries, as you will find anywhere in the neighborhoods around any large city core. Olde Towne is part of "the 'hood" which means its "transitional," but its like night and day between when I moved in and now. Lots of artists and gay boys in Olde Towne. Very active neighborhood association and block watches. Prices have gone up over the years, but there are bargains to be had, especially since the mortgage collapse. A number of homes in Columbus, and some in Olde Towne, have been caught up in several mortgage fraud cases. They will be coming on the market soon as the banks try to get out from under them.
German Village and Victorian are very high-priced. Parking in GV is a nightmare and the properties are tiny and *obscenely* priced, but many things are within walking distance. Crime situation is almost identical to Olde Towne. Many gay boys. Very active neighborhood associations in both VV and GV.
Short North and Italian Village - getting pricey, very gay, and the same crime as the rest of the city core.
Harrison West is west of VV. Its an up-and-coming place, but the same issues of core city crime. Bargains becoming fewer.
Schumacher Place and the neighborhoods around it are less pricey than GV (which they are east of). Crime is pretty much the same. Many gay boys.
Clintonville is lesbian ground zero in Columbus. Near campus (with all the pluses and minuses associated with that). Nice places, somewhat pricey. Crime is less than closer in to the city. Many gay boys there too.
Grandview is tre' gay and pricey, but less crime and much stuff within walking distance.
Upper Arlington - Republican stronghold. Low crime, high prices, not particularly gay friendly.
Bexley - Very pricey but low crime. Their police are hard, and they crush anyone from the 'hood crossing the Alum Creek to mess in their city (go them).
Places to avoid like the plague (unless you are a real pioneer who wants to sit on property for a decade or longer to recoup your investment): anywhere near OSU, especially east of High Street; the Long North area and the neighborhood between North High Street and Third especially north of Fifth; the "South of Main" area and probably the Old Oaks neighborhood (although they have a very active neighborhood org and block watch); the area around Long Street; the South Side; pretty much the entire west side, but especially Hilltop and the Bottoms; Whitehall and Morse Road (prices declining rapidly as crime moves in).

I understand about the yard issue. I have a decent-sized one, but one rarely finds a big "private" yard (i.e., not overlooked by neighboring homes) in Columbus (or most other large cities). And if you do, there's usually a premium associated with it.
