Some thoughts on words..... and the most evil word

Recently, I got into a rather vile fight with a friend. It started me to wonder about the most hateful word there is in the English language. It certainly isn’t curse words; we used them daily, in rather commonplace. (My favorite of late is MF*cker)No, it’s a word that stings and bites and leaves a bitter poison in its wound.

Whatever.

How many times have you said something, and someone has totally disregarded everything you said, with one simple word. Did they convey this message by trying to argue their side; maybe try to convince you that your opinion meant had no value? Did they use logic to dissect it? Or did they simply use “Whatever”?

Such a small word has such incredible power. A total disregard for your thoughts and feelings. Like when a child is sassy and after being reprimanded, says yeah “whatever mom/dad”. I know I am guilty of this word; I tend to roll my eyes (half way across the room) and brush off people with just one word. But the worst is when someone you know and care about and I dare say sometimes even love, comes out and says “whatever”. It’s more than just a disregard for your thoughts; it’s a disregard for you.

And yet the same word can convey such warmth, whatever makes you happy, whatever you want, whatever you need. It’s a double edged sword, which mostly nowadays is used for pain. The English language is filled with vile and bitter words, but none sting as much an a simple word, stated acerbically with intent to hurt.
