I let Ash sleep. Yeah, I knew he'd kill me.
"A not-rested person won't do us diddly against zombies."
I just imagined him and mocked him at the same time. It was kind of fun. And I had been so surprised how uneventful the night was. Ash went to sleep, almost right away and just laid there, almost like he was dead. I braced myself against the counter and pulled myself onto it so my feet were dangling. Hey, if I was staying up all night I might as well be comfortable doing it.
It was about midnight when I first heard shuffling. I didn't know if it was Ash making weird noises, though they'd be some pretty strange noises to make. I grabbed the lantern and crouched down under the counter dimming the light to only a speck and waited. Setting the lantern down I peeked my head up so only my eyes were showing and I spotted a zombie. Real alive...ok, less then alive zombie just meandering along the road. Not stopping to see if anyone was home, just moving right along. Like I was going to disturb it!
It moved out of view and I continued to hear the shuffling for a couple of more minutes until silence returned. I decided to just stay down under the counter just in case. Laying there not sleeping. I glanced over at Ash who was just as comfortable as ever and grimacing in his sleep. He must be having a pre-tty bad dream over there. But I wasn't going to wake him.
Of course the next three hours passed uneventfully and it was almost time for the shift change but he looked so peaceful and I knew I wasn't going to get any sleep so I kind of just let him sleep unawares and none the wiser. He just laid there relaxed while I moved into a sitting position balanced against the counter. No other undead paid a visit. The sun started to rise at about 4:45 and I knew he would kill me if I didn't wake him up at the crack o dawn so I did what any polite surviving scooby would do to wake up.
I walked over to him, crouched down and started to rustle him.
"Ash, wake up." I whispered. "Ash...wake. UP." I was getting impatient and man was he a heavy sleeper! I shook my head at him glanced around me and then said, "WAKE UP ASHY!" This woke him. head straight up, body up as if there was a fire except he was jumpy. He was so jumpy he grabbed my throat with non chainsaw hand and slammed me against the counter. S'alright. Didn't need that spine.
"Ash..." I chortled out. "Uhh, morning." I said as he loosened his grip a little bit. He might've been groggy but he wasn't the brightest chainsaw in the hardware store. He continued to loosen and I nodded along with him.
"Riiight. I'm Xander. Your...well, more or less friend who encountered you yesterday." I sighed as his grip lessened to the point that his hand wasn't on my neck any more. Thank God, breathing was definitely becoming an issue. But an issue of the past. He looked around a little dazed and his eyes went wide. "Don't worry! I just let you sleep and took both shifts. I'm in tip top shape. K?" I asked. I knew he'd be peeved but he got sleep so there was only so far that he could complain.
[Open Ash, and anyone else roaming around wanting to be found or to find us, the more the merrier I always say]
