Calling all Geeks...

I have what I hope is not a terribly unreasonable quest...

I need to get files off a computer in another city.  Via the internet.   Easily, and for free.

I don't want to RC the computer.  I'd prefer not to interrupt the person who's actually using it if at all possible.  I just want to be able to access the drives, just like any other computer on the network, and get the most current version of whatever file I need.

It's got to be something
1. reasonably secure (you wouldn't piss yourself if I installed it on YOUR network)
2. easily downloaded/installed by a non-techie with above average intelligence and the ability to read, at both ends (i.e. actual software or instructions, not "why don't you just create a VPN using SSH from GNU"...I'm not competent to configure something from scratch right now).
3.  And it has to be freeware, or already part of Windows XP...or at least cost less than a trip for two to Starbucks.

Online storage of the documents is not an option.  Having someone launch the access software on the other end is...though it'd be nice if it could be always available to connect to when that computer is on.  I'm not protecting classified documents here, and I don't need to be able to connect from anywhere.  Just point A to point B.

I know this is probably stupidly simple...I'm just too far out of the loop these days to know exactly where to look.

Any of you have a simple answer off the top of your incredibly sexy brain?
