The One Who Got Away

Write about the one that got away.

The one that got away? That’s me. There’s no other way about it. I had to escape, to hide, if I wanted to stay alive.

Oh, and it was a good plan. A perfect plan. The Wizard wanted me dead. Liquidated so to speak. You see, there was this silly rumor going around that water would melt me. Sillification, I know. Fiyero, the captain of the Wizard’s guard at the time, knew of the plan. Or something of it. He helped me hide in his castle. Showed me the trap door system. All was in place, but still…it had to be perfect.

If I hadn’t been in the right place when the child threw the bucket at me… If Fiyero had been too afraid of the fire to let me… If the door had stuck…

But everything worked out. I “melted”, just as I was supposed to do. The child had her trophy. Yero would be back.

My only regret is that Glinda had to see it, but knew nothing. I heard her run to the spot where I’d been. Heard the rustling as she picked up the hat she’d given me that day at Shiz. Heard the clinking as she picked up the bottle I’d carried with me my whole life. Heard her crying with a heart broken by seeing her best friend liquefied.

Sure enough, once the child was safely back to her home and things were returning to normal, Fiyero came to get me, and we escaped into the forest. Leaving out lives…our friends behind. We didn’t have a choice. If we didn’t, we’d both be dead.

So you see, the one who got away? It was me.
