Sunny Shores

Chapter One Of Twenty

---

Elijah Wood tapped his foot impatiently against the pavement, one hand to his lips, biting his nails, the other jammed in his pocket. If he hadn’t given up four months (six days and seven hours) ago he’d really, desperately, need a cigarette. As it was he had to put up with standing there and being a nervous wreak.

Personally he blamed Daisy.

Before he’d quit smoking he’d been at the annual Lord of the Rings Cast and Crew bash. They did it at least once a year, twice if they could organise in time, all meet in one city and catch up. If a bash was happening you had to be there. It had been a promise to each other at the end of filming. So far no one had cracked under the pressure of life and not made it. Even Peter and Fran who never stopped directing. Even Orli with his multi-million dollar ass.

So he’d been drinking, and smoking, and talking to Dave Wenham, whom much of the cast affectionately called ‘Daisy’. They’d had more then a handful of scenes together and had gotten along well. The older Aussie had a quick smile and a perchance to mischief that could rival Billy and Dom. Elijah had always been thankful that it had never occurred to them to join forces. The set simply would not have been a safe place to be.

Daisy had finished up filming ‘Van Hellsing’ at the time. Elijah had been the one to bring up the subject. He had no qualms in admitting his sometimes insane geekiness and at the time the up and coming movie had all of his attention. Daisy was only too happy to spin him tales of being on the set and fill his head with ideas of what he thought of the story.

“And Hugh took me on a date.”

Elijah was certain Daisy had waited till he’d had a mouthful of his drink before dropping that little tidbit of information.

“But you’re straight!” Elijah grimaced a little, wiping with little affect at the wet spot on his shirt.

“So?” Daisy drawled in his infuriating way. “Hugh asked me out, he showed me a great time. He reckoned beautiful people should be romanced sometimes.” He scrubbed the back of his neck, chuckling in embarrassment, “I didn’t agree with the beautiful bit, but he’s Hugh Jackmen, you should try telling him he’s wrong.”

“How was it?” Elijah couldn’t help asking. He was never silent about his preference to men, though it still shocked people he hadn’t worked with before. Even with his openness he was always surprised that it wasn’t all over the headlines. It would never bother him really, he wanted to be more in music then in acting, but it had given him the chance to do some really amazing roles (and some really crap ones) in his life time.

So the idea that Hugh Jackmen may be interested in men peaked his interest.

“Perfect.”

Elijah waited a little but with no forth coming details he prodded Daisy for more. He was not above threatening to tell Sean it was Daisy who changed his phone’s ring tone to ‘it’s raining men’, taking it off silent and ringing him during his death scene. Sean had yet to live that little prank down and was still out for blood. With an almost bashful smile Daisy told how Huge had taken him ice skating, something the Aussie had never done.

“I’ve been rollerblading, of course,” Daisy confessed, “but this is on ice, with a blade under your foot. It was killer awkward, but Hugh was really good about it. He didn’t laugh at me too much when I fell on my ass. And he took me out for ice cream at this little café he knows. It was nice.”

“Just nice?” Elijah teased, bumping Daisy’s shoulder with his own. “Was there a kiss?”

Daisy blushed bright red and Elijah could only laugh, chuckling into his beer. “And was that nice?”

“Yeah,” Daisy smiled a little smile that had Elijah thinking, “It was really nice.”

Of course now it was all Elijah could think about as he stood in the arrival lounge of Sydney airport. He had taken the script which had sent him half way around the world for a number of reasons. Happy Feet was a script that Elijah hadn’t been able to pass up. It had all the things he liked in a movie; a good storyline, a happy ending with a good message. And he got to play a fluffy emperor penguin for God sakes, Elijah hadn’t been able to say no. He hadn’t even seen the rest of the cast list yet when he’d signed on.

When he did he was amazed at the amount of names that he would be working with. Nicole Kidman and Britney Murphy. Hugo Weaving was going to be great to work with again, their Lord of Rivendell was sorely missed, not many of the cast had had the chance to work with him in the last few years. Robin Williams was a legend in the business and Elijah wasn’t afraid to deny that he was more then a little excited about it.

It was when he got to the last name Elijah’s breath hitched. Hugh Jackmen. And he’d be playing Elijah’s dad. It had been so ridiculous that it was all Elijah could do not to giggle. The man who had made Daisy smile like that he would be spending the next two months with.

The worst, or best, thing about all this was that all the actors would be saying their lines together. It was something they had wanted to try, to hopefully get it all to seem a little more natural for an animated movie. So practically every scene Hugh had, Elijah would be in the studio with him.

Elijah knew he was going to have to call on every acting ability he had to just not screw up half his lines. Hence the reason he now craved a cigarette like water in a desert.

It was all Daisy’s fault.

However, it wouldn’t look good to stand Elrond up, not after he’d offered to pick him up from the airport. Sydney airport was, thankfully, nothing like most of the American airports he’d been to. It was still busy, as a big city airport should be, but he wasn’t hounded by paparazzi, or crazed fans. He’d had to pose for a couple of photos, sign a few autographs, but all in all it was relatively tame.

He certainly wasn’t Orli, but he was used to a little more attention then what he was getting. It was a refreshing change to think for himself while waiting for a friend rather then having to focus on smiling for fans. Looking at the arrival board Elrond’s flight had finally landed and he moved to the arrival lounge to wait.

Everything would be fine, he had a few days till Hugh arrived to get his head together and then he wouldn’t fuck everything up.

Lord Elrond never got off the plane first. It was some odd thing that he had to wait for every family, every old lady and as much of the planes crew as he could get away with before he stood up and collected his baggage. The little ritual had driven Peter Jackson crazy more then once, but as Hugo never had many scenes it had never been too much of a problem. Elijah, however, felt time stretch as he also had to wait for Hugo to make his way through customs before he could get back to the hotel.

Not that it mattered anyway, Elijah guessed, he didn’t have a lot to do really. Maybe the rest of his unpacking, or one or two other things. All he was after was a little conversation which he knew Hugo was very good at. A little company was a good thing and Hugo was familiar and comfortable. So he was more then a little impatient to catch up with his friend.

With the last of the flight’s passengers trailing out of the gate Elijah stood, knowing Hugo wouldn’t be much longer. He appeared without a lot of fanfare. Elijah had seen him just a couple of months before at the last get together so there wasn’t much different about him. He was just in jeans and a shirt, nothing to flash. There was a pair of sunglasses over what Elijah knew to be tired eyes. Elijah could see Hugo looking around, obviously searching for him. He turned his head slightly, laughing.

Elijah stopped still, shocked beyond belief.
