Chapter Nine of Twenty
The boat ride had been fantastic. When the sun went down the rest of the Sydney harbor lit up. Elijah could easily pick the Opera house, it was impossible not too, but Hugh pointed out other lights. The bridge was easy to see, but the big glowing face beside the water drew Elijah’s attention. Lunar Park, Hugh pointed out, was Sydney’s theme park, though much smaller then the ones in America’s bigger cities. Huge promised that he’d take Elijah one day during the week, when it wasn’t so busy.
As they maneuvered past the tempting structure Hugh leant around him, pointing out the casino, the brightest lights on the other side of the water. The action saw Elijah tucked neatly in the crook of Hugh’s arm. He tried to concentrate as Hugh also pointed out a marine museum in an interestingly shaped dome building. He could smell Hugh, just an extra bit of musk beneath the cologne he wore. It made him want to embarrass himself by snuggling further into his arms. It was only with a supreme effort that he didn’t fall back into the other man’s hold.
The boat came to a stop sometime later, Hugh shaking hands with his friend before they disembarked. Elijah stepped off first, automatically reaching out to grab a hold of the other man’s hand. He would have let go, except Hugh didn’t pull away and Elijah didn’t want too, no matter how much he blushed or sounded like one of those madmen with a stutter.
The Opera house loomed up in front of them and Hugh was fishing around in his pocket. He moved forward a little, almost into Elijah’s personal space as he produced a small torch from within his pocket.
“I don’t think this is a good place to go koala hunting,” Elijah pointed out as the small beam of light flickered into being.
“I hope not,” Hugh said with a laugh, “the little buggers wouldn’t last long with all the tourists around here. We’re here to read some poetry.”
Elijah didn’t have a chance to question it as Hugh grinned at him, shinning the light on the ground. After a little bit of a walk a circle of bronze appeared in the dark pavement, etched with a little picture and words. Elijah wasn’t able to read it, his eyesight not that good in the dark, but Hugh got a little closer, reading the words out softly to him.
He let the warmth of Hugh figure surrounding him, soaking up the gentle beat of his voice. They moved from one circle to the next and Elijah couldn’t help but get caught up in the feel of the man around him. Elijah snuggled a closer, unconsciously seeking that warmth. Hugh wrapped an arm around him, pulling him closer. It was nice. It was a normal couple thing, something he hadn’t had for a while.
“What are you thinking about?” Hugh asked as they paused, looking over the water, watching the ferries in the night.
“Just how nice this is,” Elijah nudged Hugh with his shoulder, enticing another grin. “And that it’s been a while since I last had this.”
Hugh hummed in agreement, free arm wrapping around Elijah’s waist as he pulled them both down onto a bench. “That’s true,” his arm stayed where it was. “Its been a long time since the Van Hellsing set.”
“You’re last date was Dave?” Elijah found that a little hard to believe.
“Date, yes,” Hugh managed, blushing under his look, making Elijah grin. “But not the last person I was with.” There was a slide of eyes and a slightly ducked head, “even I have need of a companion occasionally.”
“Don’t I know it,” Elijah said ruefully, “but I’m not often into one night stands. I like cuddling afterwards too much.”
“Yeah,” the arm around him squeezed him even closer. Elijah felt warm all the way through.
“So why Dave, he’s very straight, you know?” Elijah changed the subject as their fingers laced together, it was still to early in the night to talk beyond one date.
“I would have to be blind to not know,” Hugh said with a laugh, “but he was far from home and he needed a little distraction. Dave was in need of a little romancing and I was more then happy to oblige.”
“You left an impression,” Elijah tipped his head, looking at the other man, the comfortable sight of him drawing a smile to his lips.
“On who? Him, or you?” Hugh returned Elijah’s smile as he chose not too answer. “Would it be all right if I kissed you, Elijah?”
Elijah’s breath caught and he nodded, a little mesmerized as Hugh’s head ducked down towards him. Before their lips touched Elijah closed his eyes, letting himself be overwhelmed with the feel of the man around him.
