All I Needed Was The Rain

Another rainy night in Seattle and it didn’t look like it was going to let up any time soon.  Miranda Bailey had considered attempting the drive home - she was aching to cuddle her son, hoping to get home in time to sing him to sleep and then soak the day away in a nice hot bath - but the downpour was pretty bad and she’d seen too often the tragic results of driving in the wet.  So, instead, she made her way across to Joe’s to wait it out.

It had been a while since he’d seen Bailey sitting at his bar.  She wasn’t a frequent flier, but he was used to seeing her familiar little form warming a seat from time to time.  She looked tired.  Joe wondered what had been keeping her away.

“Gin and Tonic?” he asked, approaching her with a smile.

“Ginger Ale” she answered.  “I’m driving home as soon as it lets up.”

He nodded, pouring her drink over some ice and as an after thought, added a little paper umbrella.

Bailey took one look at the drink and snapped, “Did I ask for a little floating decoration?”

“No”, answered Joe, unperturbed, “but you looked like you could use one?”

She glared at him.  “I - I - I looked like I could use one?  What exactly is it about my appearance or demeanour that suggests I was in need of a teeny-tiny little toothpick wrapped in coloured paper?”

“Uh… an umbrella?  The storm… keeping you here…? Okay, well I obviously read that wrong”, Joe leaned down on the bar in front of her with his arms folded.  “I was trying to be ironic.”  He smiled.

“Yeah, well don’t try so hard…” she grumbled, picking the offending item out of her drink.  “Irony is a subtle art” she finished, taking a sip, her big brown eyes darting up to his face and back in a muted attempt at an apology.  “It doesn’t work so well on tired, cranky surgeons.”

-----

Forty-five minutes later and it didn’t look like the rain was going to let up.  Miranda sighed and wriggled a little on the bar stool.  Her back was killing her.  Her eyes searched the crowded room for a more comfortable seat, and instead found Torres and Hahn seated together in a corner booth, deep in conversation.  She wasn’t sure what it was exactly that had drawn her focus there, but as she watched the two, for a brief moment she wished she had that kind of friendship with someone at the hospital.  Someone who’d understand.

And then she saw it.

It was nothing, and yet there was something…  They obviously shared affection for one another, chatting and laughing easily, encouraged by alcohol, their street clothes smart but comfortable.  To the casual observer they were just a couple of girls out enjoying drinks after work.  But Miranda wasn’t watching so casually anymore.  There was something…  She frowned a little, her eyes searching.  And there is was again.

“Well I’ll be…” she muttered to herself as it dawned on her.

It was attraction.  Sometimes a look, while the other wasn’t watching, sometimes an unconscious need to touch in a way that was just as unconsciously reciprocated.  All this going on beneath the casual chatting, joking and drinking.

-----

When the rain had finally eased up, Bailey signalled to Joe for her bill.  As he handed over her change she casually questioned, “So… how long has this been going on?”  There was no way the bartender had missed this.  He looked up as she tipped her head towards the two women now playing darts.

Joe had to admit, nonchalance really worked for Bailey.  He tried to go along with it.  “You mean the darts or the dating?”  She stared him down.  “Um… I’m not sure.  Well, at least from before Addison was here, so…”

“Addison knows?” she blurted, making him laugh.  “Damn.  How’d I miss it?” she whispered to herself.  Then a thought occurred to her.  “Was she… was she ah… ok about it?” She tried not to imply anything in particular.  Joe couldn’t help but grin.

“She was fine.  Apparently she and Callie never…”

“Oh.”  Bailey frowned, then caught herself.  “What?  No, no.  I didn’t mean…”  Joe folded his arms over his chest, eyebrows raised, awaiting an explanation as the woman before him bristled.  “Listen, people’s private lives is their business!”

“Sure,” he smiled.  “But when they bring it into my bar…  I’m not blind Dr. Bailey.”  He turned to watch the corner booth.  “Although those two can’t see the damn forest for the trees.”

But as Bailey watched, she wasn’t so sure.  There was suggestiveness to their play that seemed start and stop.  A flash of awkward that Torres covered with a joke and a smile.  Confusion crossed Hahn’s face, but she smothered it and went back to chatting.

Well, whatever it was, the rain had let up and it was time to head home.  But she’d sure as hell be paying attention tomorrow.
