It would be possible. So somewhere, someone used a bullet from his gun to kill him, brought him back to his room, shot off the shot heard by the neighbor, locked the door, and...?
Actually, it wouldn't be all that foolish. If you killed someone somewhere, setting up such a scene somewhere else would be a rather good idea, as all the real forensic evidence would be at the actual scene, and not where they were looking. The only problem, of course, is the locked door.
Perhaps it's the kind of lock you can lock before closing the door? So even though the it's locked from the inside someone can easily lock it before leaving. I have a lock like that on my workshop door. Just a thought.
That is an excellent idea, and indeed, I know that some locked door mysteries end with such an answer. The answer to this one, however, is a bit more bizarre.
