Title: Elphaba's Valentine
Rating: G
Pairing: Elphaba/Fiyero. Yes, that's right, I wrote Fiyeraba. And it's musicalverse. The world might very well cave in now.
Summary: Elphaba can't help being slightly jealous of the tons of Valentine's Day cards that her roommate receives... until she finds out that she got a card, too.
Disclaimer: They aren't mine.
I'm not sure what I think about this. I'm never really crazy about the style in which I write musicalverse... and I do struggle with Fiyero. And it's also pretty late. We'll see how this turns out, I suppose.
“Care to check mail, Elphie?”
This was only the second time that Elphaba and Galinda had eaten lunch together, but the green girl had already picked up on the blonde’s routine. Galinda compulsively checked her mailbox every time she passed from the dining room to the stairs that led to their room, and there was hardly a time when there wasn’t something tucked in there - a love letter, a note from Pfannee, a small package from her mother… And today, on Valentine’s Day, Galinda was sure to have a full mailbox.
Elphaba knew she did, anyway. She had passed the mailboxes multiple times today and had glanced in their direction every time. Many were stuffed with letters and gifts, but Galinda’s was by far the worst, the pile of pink, red, and white envelopes seeming to threaten to break the wooden frame of the box and to spill out onto the floor.
Elphaba’s mailbox, directly below Galinda’s, had been empty all morning.
“I’ll wait while you check mail,” the green girl said, practically ignored as Galinda squealed at the valentines awaiting her. “You know there’s never been anything in my mailbox.”
“Oh, that’s not true, Elphie.” Galinda struggled to pull the letters out, balancing them precariously on top of her books and reaching down to pick up a few that had fluttered to the ground. “There are always those notices Madame Morrible sends out to the whole school.”
“Oh, yes, I must have forgotten,” Elphaba replied curtly, and Galinda was shocked to realize that she might have hurt the green girl. Did Elphaba actually care about whether or not anyone wrote to her? She never seemed to… but maybe she was genuinely upset. Maybe she was jealous.
Galinda rose back up again, her eyes coming to rest on Elphaba’s box and the single crimson envelope inside. “It hardly looks empty today,” she said with a smile, reaching into the mailbox and holding the envelope up.
Elphaba flushed a dark green and snatched it away from her. “This isn’t from you, is it?”
“No,” Galinda replied with a toss of her hair, heading towards the stairs. “If it had been, though, I would be absolutely crushed by your reaction, since you clearly don’t want it to be from me.”
“I just wanted to make sure you weren’t feeling sorry for me, that’s all.” Elphaba followed Galinda up the stairs, holding doors for the card-laden blonde and unlocking the door once they reached their room.
“You must open it right away.” Galinda smiled brightly, dropping her load of books and envelopes on her bed. “Oh dear, I wish they’d write their names on the outsides of the cards. I’d really like to read Fiyero’s first.” She selected a pale pink envelope, frowning once she opened the card and read the name inside. “Boq. Of course.” She tossed both card and envelope over her shoulder, sifting through the rest and wishing that she knew Fiyero’s handwriting. “I wonder what color envelope he would be most likely to choose.”
Elphaba knew exactly what color envelope Fiyero would choose. She was standing by the window, red envelope in one hand, note in the other. Happy Valentine’s Day, Elphaba. Meet me at one. F.
There was no other “F” at Shiz that she could think of, and no other person in the entire school - besides Galinda or Nessa - who would bother to send her a note in the first place. It had to be Fiyero, she realized, ignoring Galinda’s muttering as she reread the note over and over again. It was so simple, yet it made her heart race like she had never felt before… except maybe on that day with the lion cub, but she had tried to write her speeding heartbeat off as mere adrenaline.
“Here it is!” Galinda chirped, holding up a note that looked surprisingly like Elphaba’s. The green girl quickly pocketed hers, hoping that Galinda wouldn’t notice the similarities. The blonde, however, was far too involved in her own note to pay any attention to her roommate. “Meet him at two? But it’s already one now! How on earth am I supposed to throw together an outfit in time?”
To Elphaba’s great relief, Galinda rushed out of the room in search of assistance, making it much easier for the green girl to dash out a moment later and hurry down the stairs. Where exactly was she supposed to meet Fiyero? There was only one place she could think of, so she ran towards it - the spot where they had stopped to discuss the fate of the lion cub, near the edge of the forest and in the shadow of the bridge.
“You’re late,” Fiyero called, stepping away from the tree he had been leaning against and smiling at Elphaba in a way that was quite unnerving. “I was beginning to think that you hadn’t gotten my note.”
“I only just got it,” Elphaba somehow managed to say, quite out of breath from running. “Why are we meeting?”
“It’s Valentine’s Day,” Fiyero replied, moving even closer to her and flourishing a yellow rose tied with a red ribbon. “I wanted to see you.”
“But what about Galinda?” Elphaba reached out towards the flower, caressing the petals lightly with her long, green fingers.
“I’ll see her later, naturally. I have no choice in the matter.” He rolled his eyes, and Elphaba couldn’t help frowning.
“Saving the best for last, then?”
“Not at all.” Fiyero leaned forward as if to kiss her on the cheek, but he moved at the last moment and pressed his lips to hers. Elphaba froze for a moment, unsure of how to react, before she finally gave in and kissed him back. “I figured I’d see my valentine first and my girlfriend later. Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of time, since Galinda will be here at two.”
“She needs to pick out an outfit with only an hour’s notice,” Elphaba replied with a wide smile, taking the flower from him before looping her arms around his neck. “I’m sure we’ll have plenty of time.”
