From what I've read about Libya, the long and the short: with the exception of Italy, Libya doesn't export so much oil that we need to worry about it. The big thing is it being directly in "the West's" backyard. Where Zimbabwe is remote, the plague, famine and cruel politics affect South Africa more than anywhere else.
With respect to the people claiming to head the revolution, they "claim" to be led by councils of intelligentsia, both local and in exile; so far their military apparatus has been loyal to a governing council. Unlike the arab unrest of the previous generations-- this is not a cult of personality or a military coup. So far, they have been very transparent to the people in eastern libya, to the press, and each other. But you're right to openly doubt if things will stay this way.
The focus of the current external military operation is to enforce the ceasefire and prevent Gadafhi from leveling Benghazi like he's raped rebel cities in western Libya. Again, why here and not in Sudan-- Sudan is not a boat ride away from "Europe." Or I can be less callous and say that the world has learned it's lesson about letting a country descend into civil war.

I would disagree about the US lack of policy in Bahrain. I don't think the US is trying to placate "The Kingdom" as it's come to be known in the news-- Bahrain simply does not have the strategic importance that Egypt or Libya do. There are so many countries right now that it seems the US couldn't give a fuck about.

Hope all is going well for you in school!

Bahrain's pretty close to Iran, and has a large Shi'a population. If Bahrain didn't have strategic importance, the US wouldn't have made a military base there. And if they have made a military base there, and they consider the Saudis to be their strongest regional allies (for now), I feel that they should at least have the decency to stop them from being violent with their own citizens.

All is well here, how are things across the pond?
