Icon Tutorial No. 3: Oruha

Nov 15, 2006 17:24

I love making icons with this luscious picture of Oruha from CLAMP's Clover. She just looks so sensuous and gorgeous--you can't resist adding to that beauty! As always, 10 Steps--Purty Icon!

Level: Easy
Program: Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (may be tranferable)

Go from this to:

1. Start with this image of Oruha, and crop it at 96x96 px so that the focus is on her face and neck.

(Helpful Hint No. 1: Preset your measurements (Where Can I Do This?)

You should have something like this:

2. Duplicate the first layer (CTRL A>>CTRL C>>CTRL V) and sharpen it (FILTER>>SHARPEN>>SHARPEN). Set this layer to 60% opacity.

You should have something like this:

3. Duplicate either layer and set it on top, then Gaussian Blur it (FILTER>>BLUR>>GAUSSIAN BLUR). Set the radius to 7.5 (You Should See), then change the opacity to SCREEN at 40% opacity. This will give Oruha's skin a lovely glow.

You should have something like this:

4. Duplicate the Gaussian Blurred layer and set it on top, but set it to OVERLAY at 65%. This will make her skin glow even more while not washing the features out.

You should have something like this:

5. Create a new layer and fill it in with #000000. Set this layer to HUE at 100%. Your picture should now be black and white. Erase the part covering Oruha's face and neck so they have color again.

You should have something like this:

6. Select the first layer and use the magic wand tool to select Oruha's lips (hold SHIFT to select everything you need and release when you're done, or if you need to click undo. Just be sure to hold SHIFT if you need to start again.) Copy the selected part and place it on the very top (CTRL C>>CTRL V), setting it to 75% opacity.

You should have something like this:

7. Now use this light texture by me and set it on the very top, changing the opacity to SCREEN at 100%.

You should have something like this:

8. Text time XD! Using Porcelain, type in the letter "O" in 24 pt in #D60000. Now change the Blending Options so you have Outer Glow at 50% (You Should See). Move the letter to the left so it's parallel(ish) to Oruha's neck. Set this to SCREEN at 100%.

You should have something like this:

9. Now using this tiny text brush by moi, create a new layer, change the color to #FFF5E1 and click twice so you have two small lines slighly overlapping the O. Sharpen the layer if you think the color isn't bright enough (FILTER>>SHARPEN>>SHARPEN).

You should have something like this:

10. Save your document (preferably as a png.) and open a blank document at 100x100 px. Open your just saved document and paste it onto the blank document (CTRL A>>CTRL C>>CTRL V). Then, using this dotted border brush by me, make a border in #DD0000. Viola! Your icon is complete!

Your finished product should look like this:
