Puppets

Ok - so I know this isn't strictly a review or Wicked news but some of you might be interested so here is my puppet story

Way back in June I started making puppets on a whim and not long after they progressed into Wicked puppets with the originals being Elphie, Glinda, Fiyero and Boq. As time went on the puppets became more intricate and I started to gift them because of the great response from their responding actors had to them - first it was to Christina Tan (her cabbage emerald city dress), then to Ryan Sheppard and Deanna O'Leary, and more recently to Penny. About 10 weeks ago I got a facebook message from Erin saying that if I had a chance/time she would absolutely love a Glinda puppet. Spurred by that we started making it and posted facebook photos only to then get another message from her saying that Jemma was jealous and would love an Elphie puppet too if we had the time. Here are the results:

Glinda:
We beaded and sequined 29 odd petals like this:

and also added other details like Glinda's necklace:

and made a wand out of cardboard, lots of glue and sequins

Put it all together and you get a Glinda puppet

Elphaba
Lots of ribbons (I think there were about 18-19 different types in the skirt)

A very detailed bodice

With a special little name tag (Erin has one too that reads Erin Upland)

and a broom of course

And you get an Elphie puppet

Anyway - 10 weeks later we got in contact with Erin to say the puppets were ready and to organise a time to meet both her and Jemma so we could hand them over. After a failed attempt for a Saturday afternoon, we were finally successful in organising for last night (Thursday) before their show.

We had to take some photos of the puppets in poses that are in the program, like a For Good pose:

So here are the puppets the hour before we handed them over (complete with bubble containers, progress books, cards and some chocolates)

and we packed them into their boxes

So we rocked up to stage door (across the road) and not long after the two girls came up the road (Jemma saw us first, turned around to Erin to point us out, and then she started half running up the hill). And boy was Erin excited - she was literally jumping up and down the spot until we handed over the box:

Then was excited that she couldn't untie the ribbon on her box

I think we got a little squeal from her at this point:

Erin examining her puppet

Then it was Jemma's turn

A "it's identical to my dress!" moment

And then she realised it had cape and so she just burst out into "No Good Deed goes unpunished"

All through this we had ensemble members who were coming in to sign in being called over by the girls to have a look at their puppets

It's so hard to describe just how excited the girls were receiving their puppets - they had apparently been talking about getting them all week :P It's great to know that after all our hard work they're going to people that will really appreciate and love them. I think I'm still feeling on a high from giving them over.
