TITLE:  These Chains that Control, Chapter 9 (9/9)
AUTHOR:  wiccish

Billie Joe opened one eye and quickly closed it again.
The light in the bedroom was way too bright, and he nudged away from whatever was poking him in the ass.
He heard an impatient noise from Mike and felt something stabbing him again.  Apparently, the insistent object was Mike’s dick.
“Sleeping,” he murmured, and pulled a pillow over his head.
“S’okay,” Mike growled, running his hand down over his friend’s back to cup his ass cheek.  “I can be into necrophilia.”
Billie cursed and inched away.
Mike grabbed him to flip him over onto his back.
Billie resisted and shouted, “Goddamit!  I’m trying to fucking sleep here!”
“Shh,” Mike cautioned, “Gonna wake up your Mom.”
Billie sat up and glared at Mike. “When did you come in here? When I came to bed, you were in your room.”
“Oh?  Did you stay up all night fucking Laura?” Mike grinned and slid a hand up and down Billie’s back.
“Huh.  I wish.  No, I sat out back writing.  Then the buzz wore off and I couldn’t sleep.”
“Aw,” Mike said, pulling Billie down beside him.  “You gotta catch the buzz when it’s there.”  Pushing dark dreads aside, he nibbled on a soft bit of ear.
“Yeah.  I think my sleep’s screwed up the last few days.”
“Well, tomorrow’s Monday, so you better not lay in bed all day today.”
“Fuck,” Billie muttered, burrowing closer to his friend.  “Don’t remind me.”
“C’mere,” Mike said playfully.  “I’ll make you forget about tomorrow.  I’ll make you forget what day it is.”
******
Billie had to admit, Mike was very good at making him forget about the week ahead.
And after they shared some major fuck action, Mike made him breakfast.  It was pretty sweet having a friend who could cook, Billie thought as he finished the last of his pancakes.
Later that day, John called to say the gig they’d been trying for at Gilman would happen in two weeks.  Billie Joe was in a great mood and in the evening, Mike decided they should celebrate with the last bit of weed he’d scored the night before from one of the busboys.
“Not as good as the stuff Laura had,” Mike said philosophically as they shuffled back in the house to watch some TV.
“No, but it felt awfully good.” Billie lay with his head in Mike’s lap after they’d eaten a pile of mac and cheese.
Mike nodded and toyed with the snags in his friend’s hair.  “Yup.  It’ll do for now.  After Gilman, we can hit Kevin up again.   I’ll tell him we’ll have some money soon.”
When Ollie came in from visiting her sister, she looked at the boys on the couch and asked, “Why are you kids so tired today?”
“We went for a long walk, and then had to walk all the way back.”
Mike smacked Billie Joe on the head for lying to his mom, and for such a lame excuse.
Billie just smiled.
All in all, it had been an awesome weekend.
******
The next day Billie was awfully quiet while getting ready for school. Due to a nice fuck just before bed, he’d fallen asleep without too much trouble but Mike could tell he was stewing over the inevitable confrontation with Ferguson that afternoon.
He looked at his friend as he sat on the edge of the bed in a long-sleeved tee and his boxers, one sock on his foot and the other in his hand.  Mike grinned.  He sure was cute when he was all intense.
“C’mon, don’t sit there thinking, get up and get moving!”  Mike emphasized his words by grabbing Billie Joe’s hair and shaking his head.
Billie smiled in spite of himself and batted Mike’s hands away.  “I’m comin’, I’m comin’!”
“Who knows, maybe Ferguson croaked over the weekend.”
Billie heaved a huge sigh and smiled crookedly.  “We can only hope.”

At school, Billie met up with the usual small group of friends as they headed to their various classes.  They questioned and teased him about his absence.
“Dude, I just know you were high!”
“Aw, he was only working off a hangover.”
Billie Joe smirked at their remarks and let them slide.  As though I’d ever let on that I was freaked about detention!
At lunchtime, his half-chewed sandwich almost fell out of his mouth when Laura sauntered over with her lunch and sat down at his table.
The girl deserved a medal for bravery. No one ever came over to join the table where the weirdos and outcasts sat.  They were invisible to the rest of the cafeteria.
Laura flashed him a megawatt smile, calmly took her lunch from her backpack and asked him how he felt.
“Uh, I’m feeling pretty good right about now,” he replied, ignoring the snickers and grins from his friends.
Mike joined them and Billie forgot about everything but the fact that Laura had voluntarily joined him and his friends and the loser lunch table.
“So, we got a gig at Gilman,” he said quietly when there was a break in the conversation.
“No way!” Laura squeaked, causing several heads to turn their way.
“Way,” Mike grinned.  “Week from next Saturday.”
“That is so cool,” Laura said, wriggling in her chair.  “I can’t wait!  How long do you get to play?”
Mike and Billie filled her in on Gilman protocol and it seemed like an incredibly short lunch period when the bell rang for the next class.
After they packed up their stuff, Laura gave Billie an impulsive hug.  “See you later,” she said happily, waving her fingers as they parted.

Billie Joe dragged his feet as he approached his Algebra class.  All the energy he’d felt throughout the morning seemed to drain from him and he grimaced as he fought a vague sense of nausea.
“C’mon,” Mike said, putting a hand on his shoulder.  “It’ll be okay.  We’ll tough it out.
Billie just nodded and kept his head down as he slunk into the classroom.
He was nearly to his desk when he noticed the silence.  He looked around at the puzzled faces of his classmates as he dumped his backpack beside his chair.
At the blackboard, an unfamiliar woman was leafing through the textbook.  She glanced up and said, “Good afternoon, everyone.  I’m Ms. Hendricks.  I’ll be your substitute teacher for the foreseeable future.  Your previous teacher, Mr. Fergusson, is unable to complete the term...”
The class erupted with a buzz and Billie swung around, grinning like a fool, to face Mike.
“Fuckin’ A!” he whispered loudly.
Too fucking good to be true!
Mike grinned back and gave him a thumbs-up.  Now, hopefully Billie would stay out of stress mode.  And they could devote their energies to more important things - like girls and band practice.
“Okay guys,” the teacher raised her voice and directed the kids’ attention back to the front of the class.  “It’s a change, I know.  But let’s get back to the work at hand.”
The substitute teacher thought she’d never seen such happy students; each class had reacted in the same way.  The previous guy must’ve been a total prick, she thought.
When class ended, the teacher stopped Billie Joe and asked him to stay behind for a moment.
Mike lifted his eyebrows and nodded to the hall, indicating that he’d wait for him.
It was only a few minutes later when Billie Joe joined him.
“What was that about?”
Billie shook his head in wonder.  “This is just fucking unreal.”
“What?”
“She said she’s getting together with a couple of slow learners like me, after school once a week.  Kind of like for tutoring.”
“Shut up,” Mike said. “Like, she gives a shit?”
“Maybe.  I guess.”
Mike eyed his friend.  “And you actually wanna do that?”
Billie scoffed.  “Fuck, no.  But if I show up occasionally, she might go easy on me.  And not flunk me entirely.”
Mike nodded, appreciating his friend’s wisdom.  “That’s a possibility.”
“And it sure beats fucking detention.”
“Man, I wonder what happened to Fergusson.”
“Me too.  I guess we’ll never know.”
******
After school, Billie looked around for Laura but was disappointed.  She didn’t seem to be anywhere.
“Probably at cheerleading practice,” Mike scoffed mildly.
“Now now,” Billie said, digging his friend in the ribs, “don’t get snarky.”
They got home and Billie messed around with his guitar in the garage while Mike finished his homework.  After an hour and a half, Billie went into the house to see what was taking Mike so long.
The lanky boy was on the phone. “Wait, wait a sec - Laura, calm down. What?  Yeah, he’s right here.  Ask him.”  He handed the phone to his friend.
“Hey Laura.”
“Billie - ohmigod, you’re not going to believe!  What I just found out - oh, shit! -Yeah Mom, I’m talking to Carrie, I’m going over to work on a project with her.”
Billie grinned and shrugged at Mike.
“Uh - what’s up?”
“Billie,” she hissed in a whisper.  Can I come over?  I have to tell you something and I can’t - Mom, yes, I will!  Just let me get off the phone, all right?”
“Jesus,” she continued in a whisper, “I can’t even - look, okay if I drive up there right now? “
“Sure,” Billie replied calmly, loving the thought of Laura losing her cool.  “Mike and I are just practicing for the gig.”
“Awesome.  See you soon.”
Mike looked on curiously and Billie shrugged again.  “She’s gotta tell me something.  Maybe she’s desperate to tell me she’s in love.”
“Yeah, “ Mike sniggered, taking a swipe at his friend’s head.  “With a quarterback.”
Billie grabbed Mike in the crotch and they fell to the floor, wrestling until they were both gasping.
Mike decided to take advantage of the moment and pinned Billie Joe to the floor, grinding his hard on against him and teasing full lips with his own.
“Mike, fuck, Laura’s on her way.  I should - “
Mike laughed softly against his friend’s mouth.  “You should stay right here and suck my dick.”
“Aw man, I can’t - -“ Billie barely got the words out before Mike had his cock in his hand and pressed against his face.
“After school snack, Beej.”
Billie giggled and relented, opening his mouth wide to accommodate his friend’s girth and moaning with pleasure as Mike reached around to get his hand down the front of his pants.  Mike was very good with his hands, Billie thought as he felt long fingers encircle and tighten on his dick.
He really wanted to go shower or at least change his shirt or something, but Mike tasted so fucking good, and he was increasing his strokes so evenly and quickly, that Billie Joe sucked harder, until they were both gasping and grunting with lust.
“Suck me Beej.  Suck me hard - -“  Mike gasped and clenched his teeth, biting down on his lip to prevent an orgasmic scream.  His strong hand moved faster against Billie’s prick, feeling it swell and stiffen until he jerked backward, threw his head back and came all over Mike’s hand and himself.
They fell against each other, heads together on the floor, shuddering and sucking in air, trying to get enough oxygen to calm their hammering hearts.
“Oh god,” Billie moaned, ‘I gotta - -“
The doorbell rang and Billie hissed, “Fuck!  I gotta - let her in, will ya?” Billie scrambled to his feet and pounded up the stairs.
Mike shook his head, got to his feet, zipped up his jeans and ran a hand through his hair.  He gave a quick glance to make sure there wasn’t a puddle of come anywhere.  It looked like Billie had borne the brunt of it.
“Mike went to the kitchen window and called, “Laura, out back!”  He let himself out the back door to meet her.
Laura looked breathless, excited and nervous all at once.  “Mike,” she said, “Where’s Billie?”
“Upstairs. He’ll be down in a minute.  You okay?”
Laura shook her head.  “Yes.  I just - I just have to tell this to someone, and you guys - you have to promise it will stay between us.  It - it’s a big deal.”
Mike smiled.  She sure had her undies in a bundle over something.
There was a loud sound of feet pounding down the stairs inside and Billie appeared.  Mike’s smile turned to a full-out grin as he took in the different jeans and shirt.  And the freshly-washed face!
He imagined Billie greeting Laura with a huge wet stain on his pants and his face dripping come.  He started to laugh and let it morph into a cough.
Laura went over to Billie, sidetracked by his appearance.
“You okay, Billie?  You look - flushed.”  She put his hand to his brow and said, “Wow, you’re warm.  Think you have a fever?”
Billie hugged her and said, “Nah, I’m good.”  He grinned back at Mike over her shoulder.
Laura pulled away and put her hand to his chest.  “Jesus, Billie, your heart’s racing like you just did a line!”
Billie raised his eyebrows and looked at Mike, who continued to laugh/cough into his hand.  A line?  This little girl had some experience!
“Ah, no.  No lines.  Just happy to see you.”
“Aww,” Laura hugged him back, saying, “I hope you’re okay.  Don’t want you to be sick for Gilman next week.”
“Well, if I get sick, I’ll ask for Nurse McCaffrey.  You can take care of me.”
Laura giggled and then grew serious.  “Okay. Let’s sit down.  Big news.”
“Okay. You want something to drink?”
“Umm… you mean, a drink drink, or like, a soda?”
“Jeez, Laura, no booze.  My Mom’s not much of a drinker.  We only drink when Al gets us stuff, `cause he looks older.”
“Okay. Coke or something like that.”
The three got their drinks and sat on the picnic table.
“You have to promise, I mean, like really promise that this stays quiet.  Just the three of us.  I could get my ass kicked big time if this gets out.”
Billie nodded, and Mike shook his head in agreement.  She sure was worked up about something.
Laura looked at Billie for a moment.  “Promise with a kiss?”
Billie grinned.  He leaned in a planted a kiss full on her lips.  Surprising him, she bit down on his lower lip, refusing to let go.  “Promise?!” She asked through her teeth.
“Jeez, let go!”  Billie pulled away and laughed.  “What the fuck? What is the big deal?”
“Okay.  I just want to be sure.  I put a lot of effort into maintaining my good-girl image for my parents.”
“I’ll bet you do,” Mike replied, almost admiringly.
“Okay. So.  My mom was on the phone when I got home. She’s on the school board and knows all the shit that’s going on.  It’s usually a snore, but I could tell this was something different, so I got upstairs and picked up the extension.”
The boys nodded.
“So she’s talking to one of her cronies on the board and fucking Fergusson got fired!”
“Shut. Up.”  This was music to Billie’s ears.  The prick had his ass canned!
“Cool,”  Mike mused, “very cool.  No wonder he peeled out of the parking lot on Friday!”
“But that’s not the big deal.  Apparently… it’s like, he’s done this before!  He was harassing the women teachers, and this was like the last straw.”
“Harassing them?  Like…”
Laura nodded ominously.  “Yup. Sexually harassing them!”
Mike let out a long whistle and Billie said, “Holy shit.”
Laura was pleased that they were properly impressed.
“So it seems like it happened on Thursday.  That’s the day you went home sick, right?”
Billie nodded.  That was a weird coincidence.
“And - here’s the good part - Ms. Stanton is the one who ratted him out!”
“Whoa.”  Billie sat very still, his mind going back to the week before.  The way the nurse’s face had tightened when he was bitching about the algebra teacher.
Mike looked at his friend, pretty sure they were thinking the same thing.
“Ew, can you imagine, creepy Fergusson hassling pretty Ms. Stanton? Ick!”
Billie shook his head.  “Creeps you right out.”
Mike thought for a moment.  “That took some balls, her being new at the school and all.”
“Yes, it did. I really like her. She seems like she’d be fun.”
Billie nodded his mind far away.
“Well, that’s some news, Laura.  We won’t tell anyone.  Seems like you’re pretty good at staying cool with your folks.”
Laura laughed.  “Oh god, yes. It’s an art form.  I learned a long time ago, from my bro.  Give every appearance of doing what they want, then do your own fucking thing.”
“Right, Billie?” Laura nudged him playfully.
“Huh?  Sorry, I was just…”
“He’s in his own private Idaho,” Mike supplied.  “He does that.  Usually when a song is coming on.”
“Oooh.  I hope it’s about me!”  Laura made an exaggerated attempt at batting her lashes.
Billie threw an arm around her shoulders.  “Aw hell, I’m sure you’ll get a song out of me, Laura. You’re a piece of work!”
“Kinda hoping that’s a compliment.  Anyhow, I’m hungry. Can we go get pizza or something?”
Billie pulled his lip between his teeth and Mike said, “Aw, we’re kinda broke right now.  We’re saving for a new amp and stuff.”
“Well, it’ll be my get.  Besides, you fed me last time, when we were stoned and starving.”
Billie shrugged.  “Think you can stand pizza in Rodeo?  It’s not Zachary’s but , y’know…”
Laura stood and threw back her hair.  She flashed her big smile and said, “I can eat pizza anywhere!”
******
The next morning, Christina Stanton was surprised to see Billie Joe Armstrong waiting at her office, earlier than she’d ever seen him on the campus.
“Morning, Billie, how are you doing?”  She was surprised again when he took her key from her and opened the door for her.  “Thanks.”
“I’m good.  In fact, I’m really good.  I just wanted to…” he ducked his head, suddenly shy.  Fuck, he hated it when words failed him.
Ms. Stanton set her stuff down and looked at him questioningly.
He took a breath and let it out.  “I wanted to say thanks.  For being so cool about everything.”
She watched him turn an adorable shade of pink and pretended not to notice.
“What, for doing my job?  That’s what I’m here for.  I’m really happy to see you feeling better.  How’s Mike?”
Billie was relieved at her deft handling of the conversation.  “Hey, you remember his name.  That’s pretty cool - lotsa kids here.”
“Well, I try.  I think I’m going to like it here at Pinole Valley.”
“I hope you do.  And I bet Pinole Valley likes you.  You were really cool with, uh, Fergusson, and… well, just thanks.”
Her eyes widened a moment as he spoke, and then her features resumed their normal, pleasant aspect.
“Yeah, well I guess he’s left, so I hope your Algebra class gets a bit easier.”
He looked down and then back up at her; the glint in his remarkable green eyes told her he knew far more then he should.
“Like I said, thanks.  For everything.”
With that, he ducked out the door and down the hall.
Christina stood in the doorway and watched him move down the corridor. His slight figure was lost in the vast quiet of the school.
He might be a small kid, but she had the feeling he would create a big impression  in the world.

Epilogue

Two weeks later

The Gilman crowd was immense and Laura was right up front, proud to watch her boyfriend thrash and scream his way through another fabulous song.
She wished he would look at her or acknowledge her in some way, but he performed as if he were onstage at Carnegie fucking Hall, looking up and over the crowd, focused on something none of them could see.
He was shirtless and dripping sweat, his matted dreads were flying everywhere as he flailed and punished that sweet blue guitar.
Finally, she got her wish when he said, “This is for Laura” and launched into The One That I Want.  It hadn’t been written for her, but she was determined to make sure that at least one song would be, and hopefully soon.
The room exploded at the well-recognized song, and she threw herself into the dance, thrilled to be there and laughing at the thought of her parents, if they should ever learn where she really was that Saturday night.
During the song, Laura caught sight of - no was it? - hella yeah, it was!  Ms. Stanton stood at the back of the small room, bopping her head along with the beat.
How cool was that?
Before the next song, though, Billie intoned the words, “And this, this song is for Christina.”
Laura wrapped her arms around herself and frowned.  She was going to have to find out just who the fuck Christina was.
