Updated: 11/18/08 03:07 PM HSBC closing wholesale mortgage business, cutting 225 jobs in Depew

HSBC Mortgage Corp. is shutting down its wholesale and correspondent lending division, cutting 225 local jobs as it shifts its focus to direct lending to consumers instead of through brokers.
The Depew-based division of HSBC Bank USA notified employees of the decision and layoffs today, although employees will stay on for 60 days. But the bank will stop originations through the two "channels" effective immediately.
The job cuts represent 20 percent of the 1,100 workers at HSBC in Depew. In addition, about 100 employees scattered nationwide, who act as wholesale or correspondent representatives in other markets, are also losing their jobs.
"HSBC greatly appreciates the dedication and contribution of our employees and will assist in providing support for finding an alternate appropriate position within HSBC in every situation possible," spokeswoman Kate Durham said in an emailed statement.
