I don't read very much because it is hard work, but a friend who I have never met (She lives in another country), Carlinos, wrote some interesting stuff recently about the link between food and mental health. It got me thinking.

Yes. Absolutely insane. I think the problem is that for a large percentage of the population fat and sugar are addictive, probably more so than even tobacco(my own worst habit I have to be honest enough to admit). I'm sure that once upon a time when winter food had to be scavenged from scarce resources this taste was good for survival, but in these days of plenty it is a curse.

When some English schools banned junk food a few years ago there were TV reports of parents smuggling potato chips(fries) to their kids through the bars of the school playground!

I also have a strong suspicion that our exposure to plastics and other mineral-oil based materials also compounds the trend toward obesity, diabetes, depression, ADHD, and a whole range of other physical/mental/mood disorders. Some factor above genetic vulnerability must be involved in the more than ten fold increase in ALL these illnesses during the last thirty years!

Anecdotal I know, but I DO see my mood swings linked to my diet. When I stick to a healthy fresh-veg low-meat diet (which I do 90% of the time) there always comes a time when I crave pies and biscuits and chocolate etc. I probably spend a week every few months eating total junk. I cannot say if it is the depression causing me to eat bad, or the other way round (hence my post). Either way it is a downward spiral.

Oh well! I'm off to make myself another strong coffee - my second worst addiction! (HaaHa.. maybe third - after touching myself in private but stimulating ways.)
