Chapter Six

Scotty had the video camera rolling as Megan, seated on Paige’s lap, pulled at the party hat on her head.

"OK, here we go!" Nora yelled as she walked in from the kitchen, carrying a cake with four little candles on it.

The family started singing "Happy Birthday," as Nora placed the cake in front of Megan. She clapped, then leaned forward trying to reach the icing. Seated next to her, Kevin quickly grabbed her hand.

As the song finished, Scotty called out, "Blow out the candles, honey!"

"Paige, help her," Nora instructed.

"OK, let’s blow them out," Paige said, as she scooted forward and bent closer to the cake. She took a deep breath and nodded at Megan. Megan leaned forward and blew out the candles.

"Oh, good," Tommy said. "She only spit on the cake a little bit."

Julia smacked her husband’s arm. "Did you make a wish, sweetie?"

Megan nodded, then said loudly, "I wanna bwutha!"

Scotty looked up from the camera. "Did she just say...?"

The others started grinning. Rebecca hid her smile behind her hand.

"Sweetie, how about a puppy?" Kevin finally asked.

"Kevin!"

**

Scotty was somewhat surprised - but grateful - that after so long together, Kevin’s and his love life was as strong as ever, if not more so. It was their anniversary, and over dinner, Kevin had hinted to Scotty that they might want to start trying if they were going to give Megan that baby brother. As soon as Scotty had recovered from the shock, he decided to focus on the trying part, and they hurried home. Scotty had put Megan to bed early while Kevin drove Paige, now their regular baby-sitter, home to Sarah’s.

And now, Kevin was spooned up behind Scotty, thrusting slowly. His arm was draped over Scotty’s hip - the hand stroking him firmly. His mouth was warm and wet where he sucked at the juncture of Scotty’s neck and shoulder. Scotty blindly reached back, grabbing Kevin and forcing him even closer. He groaned loudly.

Kevin paused, pulling his mouth away to hush Scotty with a chuckle. "Quiet," he whispered. "You’ll wake her." Scotty’s only response was a strangled "don’t stop, oh God, don’t stop."

Kevin’s lips latched onto him again; he started moving faster and Scotty arched back to meet him. Kevin bit down lightly and Scotty was finished, gasping and shuddering as he came. Rolling Scotty further onto his stomach, Kevin began rocking into him more forcefully, erratically. Scotty grabbed onto the headboard and buried his face into the pillow, biting down on the fabric in an effort to stifle his moans. Kevin pressed into him once, twice, three more times before stilling, releasing, and then collapsing onto Scotty’s back, panting.

After a few moments, he rolled off Scotty to keep from crushing him. Scotty turned his head towards Kevin, offering him a smile. He reached a hand over, resting it on Kevin’s chest as they both fought a losing battle against sleep.

"Daddy?" came a quiet voice by the door. The knob shook slightly as a little hand reached up to turn it and push the door open. "Daddy, you OK?"

Kevin sat up quickly. "Oh shi - honey! What are you doing up?"

"I heawd a noise. Is Daddy OK?"

Kevin looked to Scotty for help, but his husband - head again buried in the pillow, this time because he was shaking with laughter - gave him none. Kevin quickly reached to the edge of the bed, grabbing and slipping on Scotty’s boxers as his own had somehow ended up across the room. He went to meet his daughter by the door, thwapping Scotty on the back with his pillow as he climbed out of bed.

"Daddy’s fine. He just...had a bad dream." A muffled, whimpered snort came from the direction of the bed. "Let’s get you back to bed."

"Should I hold Daddy’s hand ‘til he falls ‘sleep?" Megan asked around a yawn as she took Kevin’s hand and followed him down the hall. "That’s what he does when I have a bad dweam."

"No, honey. That’s very sweet of you, but Daddy will be OK."

Kevin led Megan into her room and then picked her up, setting her down on the bed. "You go back to sleep, OK honey?"

"OK, Dad." She held her arms out and Kevin leaned down to hug her.

"Do I get a hug too?" Scotty asked from the doorway. He walked over, knelt next her bed, and hugged her.

"Don’t be scawed, Daddy," she whispered as she kissed his cheek. When he pulled back, she reached over to grab one of the multiple stuffed animals sharing her bed. "Wanna sleep with my doggie?"

Scotty smiled and kissed her forehead. Lightly pushing her down onto the bed, he tucked the dog under her arm and pulled the blankets over her. "Thank you, sweetie. You sleep with Buster, and Dad will protect me, OK?"

"OK," she murmured, heavy eyes already falling shut.

Scotty ran a hand down her arm, while Kevin bent to kiss her. "Go to sleep," Kevin whispered.

She was out within seconds. Kevin and Scotty slipped out of the room, pausing to look back from the doorway. "I love her so much," Scotty whispered with a smile.

Kevin nodded in agreement. "Too bad we almost just scarred her for life."

Scotty snickered quietly before turning serious. "Let’s do it," he whispered. "Let’s try for another one."

Kevin looked at Scotty with a grin. "What happens on her next birthday when she asks for a pony?"

"Oh, that was weeks ago. She's already forgotten. And if not, we’ll just deal with that then."

Kevin stared at Scotty for a moment. "OK," he agreed. "I’ll call the lawyer tomorrow."

Scotty smiled, and he reached down for Kevin’s hands. Walking backwards, he dragged an unresisting Kevin down the hallway. "Come on, old man," he whispered, flashing a teasing grin. "Come put me to bed."

Kevin caught up to him, pulling him into an embrace as they entered their bedroom. "Fine," Kevin agreed, leaning in for a kiss. "But this time, be quiet."
