They had seen each other a couple times now, since they came back into each other’s lives. Kevin was as handsome as ever. A little bit older, of course. A little wiser. But still gorgeous. Being in love suited him.
Kevin was still intelligent, and bitingly funny, and prone to arguing. He was a lawyer, of course. But at the same time he was quieter now, calmer. More satisfied with life, he guessed. Or perhaps his thoughts were elsewhere.
Ignoring the sounds and activity around them, he watched Kevin from across the small table, trying not to be obvious about it. He could still remember the first couple times they met. He had thrown Kevin a little, he knew that, but Kevin had managed to hold his own. They traded pointed comments with underlying innuendo, eyes flashing promises they weren’t yet ready to follow through on. They had made out with words long before they made out with lips.
He remembered how vulnerable Kevin could be, how nervous he was during their first real date. And he could still remember how upset Kevin had been about his brother’s troubles; indeed, it was Kevin’s love for his family that he really fell for in the first place, even if it meant slight strain in their own relationship.
Well, OK, honestly, it was Kevin’s smile that he fell for in the first place. And, really truly honestly, it was his sarcasm.
But back to that vulnerability thing…he could remember how he felt when Kevin opened up with him. And later, how he danced around the words before he finally said them, slipping them into conversation like they were no big deal even though his fear and emotion were painfully clear.
He had tried to blame Kevin for their break-up. It was Kevin’s insecurities, Kevin’s flaws, Kevin’s inability to commit, Kevin’s selfishness. But in the end, he had to admit it was both of them - that he was just as much to blame, if not more, for the fact that Kevin was now lost to him forever. He knew it was pointless to wish for another chance. He could see for himself that Kevin had moved on and now only saw him as a friend. More of a potential friend, really.
Friends. Friends didn’t know what each other sounded like just before they came. He could still remember the feel of Kevin’s hand in his hair as they kissed. And, oh God, he could remember what Kevin was like in bed. Sometimes passionate and quick and enjoyably rough. And sometimes slow, romantic, whispering tender words. Always loving, though, even at the beginning. He remembered Kevin in the dead of night, reaching out for him. And in the shower, grinning as he soaped him up and all thoughts of being on time to work flew out of both their minds. He remembered Kevin kneeling on the floor, laughing as he turned the Liza pillow around underneath his knees so she couldn’t watch as Kevin bent down and took him slowly in his mouth.
And he could still remember - Kevin’s cell phone interrupted the trip down memory lane. Kevin apologized, answering quickly. As soon as Kevin realized who was on the other end, the stress and worry and drama that always seemed to hang around him slipped away. Kevin greeted the caller with a soft hello and a pet name. Being in love definitely suited him.
“What?” Kevin said, standing as his mood suddenly changed. “You’re kidding. Oh my God. Oh, holy hell. Jesus H. Christ,” Kevin exclaimed, holding a hand to his mouth. And then he remembered himself, glancing over with an embarrassed and apologetic expression.
Jason waved his hand. The joy in Kevin’s words hurt him more than the blasphemy did, anyway.
“Kevin, what is it?” Kitty asked, Walker curiosity evident.
Jason glanced at Robert, who returned an amused smile and a shrug. He was used to the peaks of activity that came with living with a Walker. Jason had forgotten what it was like.
Perhaps one of the few things he didn’t miss.
Kevin hung up. “I have to go,” he said. “Sorry, Kitty, I can’t tag along with you on campaign stuff today. Robert, see you later. Jason, it was - it was nice seeing you again.”
Jason nodded, relieved and disappointed that their unplanned reunion was ending so suddenly. It had been a shock when they realized they were visiting at the same time, but Jason had welcomed the chance to see him again. As much as it hurt.
“Will you please calm down and tell me what’s going on?” Kitty said loudly, drawing Jason’s attention back to the moment at hand.
Kevin grinned, pulling his jacket off the back of his chair and putting it on. He took a deep breath as he adjusted the collar and checked for his keys. “That was Scotty,” he explained unnecessarily. “Michelle’s pregnant.”
The reaction was instantaneous, with both Kitty and Robert standing to congratulate Kevin and see him out. Thankfully, that allowed Jason a few moments to compose himself, to deal with the unexpected blow, to remember that he didn’t really want Kevin back anyway. Then he also stood, accompanying the others to the door, quietly offering Kevin his own congratulations.
Kevin smiled at him then, that smile that had nearly knocked Jason over the first time he saw it. He thanked him and hurried out the door. Being in love definitely suited him. Jason smiled softly, turning away from the door. He reminded himself to ask forgiveness later, for coveting another man's spouse.
