“And that’s downtown? Oh, OK. Thanks so much. I really appre - sorry? Fundraiser meeting tomorrow night? Uh, you know, I think we have plans; I’ll have to check. Thanks again. OK, bye Donna.”
Scotty glanced curiously at Kevin as he walked out of the bedroom, buttoning the cuffs of his sleeves. Kevin hung up the phone and jotted some quick information on a notepad.
“Who were you talking to?” Scotty asked, and Kevin started in surprise.
He turned to face Scotty. “I didn’t realize you were out here. Uh, that was Donna Jones.”
Scotty shook his head to indicate he didn’t recognize the name.
“My high-school sweetheart.”
“Excuse me?” Scotty asked, one eyebrow raised.
Kevin laughed as he walked closer to his husband and took him into his arms. It was the Monday after their wedding, and Kevin didn’t quite want to leave him and go to work. True, he had made quick trips to Sarah’s and his mother’s about Ryan and to Kitty’s and Tommy’s to return rings... But they spent the entire next day in bed to make up for it, and Kevin really wished they could repeat that.
“We were each others’ beards to junior prom. She heard through the - and I swear this is her term, not mine - gayvine that we got married and wanted to offer her congratulations.”
“Aw, that’s nice,” Scotty said with a smile.
“She scares me,” Kevin added.
Scotty laughed and gave him a quick kiss before removing himself from Kevin’s embrace. “Have you eaten breakfast?” he asked.
“Uh...” Kevin hesitated, looking at his watch.
“Sit,” Scotty ordered. “It’s the most important meal of the day.”
He disappeared into the kitchen, and Kevin sat on the couch with an amused shake of his head.
“You’re off tonight, right?” he called.
“All day, really! I’m just going in for a staff meeting this afternoon.”
“You want to meet me somewhere at, like, 5:30?”
“That’s a little early for dinner, don’t you think?”
“Not dinner. It’s a surprise. I’ll give you the address, but you can’t look it up.”
Scotty walked back to the doorframe and looked at Kevin suspiciously.

Kevin snuck out of the office early and was already leaning against the brick storefront as Scotty pulled into a parking space. He climbed out of the car, and removed his sunglasses as he read the store name in surprise.
“Kevin, why are we at a jewelry store?”
“I got the name of this place from Donna. They have a really great reputation for being gay-friendly.”
“OK, and...?”
“We need rings,” Kevin explained as he reached out and pulled the door open.
“Oh!”

“I feel like a freak now,” Kevin observed as he walked out of the store almost two hours later.
“Why? Because it took us that long to decide on plain gold bands and an engraving of our initials and the date of our ceremony?”
“No! Because of...my fingers. They don’t even carry my size in stock!”
Scotty threw his head back in laughter as he stopped walking and faced Kevin. He looked at him, smiling affectionately. Then he reached down for Kevin’s left hand, lifting it and holding it in between their chests. He bent to kiss the backs of Kevin’s fingers quickly, adding a little nip to the tip of the ring finger as he pulled away.
“Can I let you in on a little secret?” he murmured.
“Hmmm?” Kevin replied, grinning.
Scotty dropped his voice low. “I really, really like your fingers.” He looked up at Kevin, just barely smiling in teasing seduction.
Kevin stared back at him, speechless for a long moment. Then, he finally said, “Race you home.”
Scotty grinned, and they separated, both hurrying to their parked cars.
“Don’t get pulled over!” Scotty warned.

“Thanks for lunch,” Justin said as he held the door of the restaurant open behind him.
Kevin pocketed his wallet and put on his sunglasses as he followed Justin outside. “No problem,” he said. He paused before bringing up a subject he didn’t really want to mention. “So it seems like things are sort of...back to normal with you and Rebecca?”
Justin looked quickly at him and turned away. “Uh...yeah,” he said. “Yeah, you know. Normal.”
Kevin glanced at Justin, confused and more than a little suspicious by his answer. Before he could press further, however, his phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket, but he didn’t recognize the number on the screen.
“Kevin Walker?” he answered.
He stopped abruptly as the voice on the other end began to talk. Then he began to smile. It was Justin’s turn to stare at him in confusion.
“OK, thank you. Yes, I can come right now.”
He hung up the phone and turned to Justin with a grin. “Mind if we make a stop?”
“What’s going on?”
“The rings are in,” Kevin said excitedly.
Justin shook his head in fond amusement, patting Kevin on the back as they walked towards his car. A little over forty minutes later, heading out of the jewelry store, Justin was anything but amused. On the other hand, Kevin couldn’t control his chuckles.
“I can’t believe that salesperson thought I was your ‘new husband,’” Justin muttered, which set Kevin’s laughter off again.

“Hello?” Kevin called out as he entered the loft.
“Bedroom,” came the slightly muted response.
Kevin put his keys on the bookshelf and hurried in the direction of his husband. He walked through the door and stopped abruptly when he saw the mess on the bed. Scotty was sitting cross-legged with several sheets of paper and a box of cards next to him.
“What’s going on?”
Scotty glanced up at him, then turned to his work again. “Thank you cards. Right now, I’m sorting names and addresses with what they got us. You should probably write the ones for your family and people from the firm, and I can write the others.”
Kevin continued to stare. “Can’t we just write ‘Thanks, Kevin and Scotty’ on everything and be done?”
“Noooo,” Scotty said, laughing. “They have to be personalized.”
Kevin walked over, kneeling carefully on the bed as he sat down on an empty corner. “I swear we didn’t invite this many people.”
Scotty exhaled, looking around the bed again. He nodded. “I know.” Then he turned back to Kevin with a smile. He leaned forward and kissed him quickly. “Hi, by the way. How was your day?”
“Good. Great. Um, can I - ?” Kevin trailed off as he started to gather the paper in a pile. He moved the list over to the nightstand, and Scotty placed the box of cards aside as well.
“What is it?” Scotty asked.
Kevin reached into his pocket and, with a deep breath, opened the small case. He presented the rings to Scotty who smiled. “They came in?” he asked.
Kevin nodded, grinning widely. “They called me this afternoon.”
Scotty put a hand out slowly, touching one of the rings with the tip of his finger. He then pulled one out.
“This one’s yours, I think,” he said softly.
“Yeah,” Kevin whispered.
He held out his hand, palm up, for the ring. Scotty was about to hand it to him when he paused.
“No, we should...do this right. We should say something.”
“Like what?”
Scotty took hold of Kevin’s hand, turning it gently over so it was resting in his. “I don’t know. What’s the - I, Scotty, take thee, Kevin - ”
“You can take me anytime you want,” Kevin interrupted, adding an “ow” as Scotty dug his nails into the side of Kevin’s palm.
“Be serious,” Scotty chastised, unable to completely hide his own laughter.
“Sorry,” Kevin replied, smirking.
Scotty looked up at Kevin, and his smile faded as they stared into each other’s eyes. Scotty cleared his throat and looked down at their hands again. As he slid the ring over Kevin’s knuckle, he spoke quietly.
“I wonder if you realize how much you mean to me, how little the words ‘I love you’ even begin to cover. I promise to show you that every day, however I can, and I promise to love you forever. I know things won’t always be easy, but I think as long as we have each other, we’ll survive anything. I will never give up on you, Kevin, or on us.”
Kevin took a deep breath and released it slowly. He rubbed his thumb against Scotty’s hand for a moment before looking up at him. Smiling, he reached down and removed the other ring from its little pillow. He turned it over and over between his fingers before picking up Scotty’s hand again. Looking into Scotty’s eyes, he began to talk.
“I never thought I’d meet anyone who would make me break every promise I made about...how much of myself to give to someone else. You have no idea how you've changed me, and how very much I owe you for that. I’ve never been happier in my whole life than I have been these last months with you. I just hope I can spend the rest of my life trying to make you that happy. Scotty, I will love you always, and I will do my absolute best to make this work, no matter what.”
Scotty made a small noise as Kevin finally slipped the ring onto his finger. He looked up at Kevin again, beaming. Neither man tried to hide the emotions or tears in his eyes. Kevin exhaled sharply.
“So,” he said, voice rough. “You may now kiss...?”
Scotty laughed, somewhat breathlessly. “You damn well better kiss.”
“I love you,” Kevin mouthed, just barely shaking his head in emphasis as he moved his hands up to Scotty’s neck and shoulder and pushed him backwards onto the bed.
