Previous Chapter Chapter Six
"You’re kidding me," Kevin said quietly as he stared into the trophy case the school had put together for the reunion.
"Nope," Scotty said, laughing.
The evening was winding down. Jack and Marie had already left, with renewed promises to stay in touch, and there were only a few people still milling around the school. Kevin and Scotty were standing in a side hallway near the gym, and Scotty had just pointed out an award in a back corner of the case.
"You won State?"
"Mm-hmm."
Kevin straightened and turned to stare at Scotty. "Who are you, and what have you done with my husband?"
Scotty smiled enigmatically. "A little mystery’s good for a relationship."
Kevin shook his head in disbelief.
"I’m going to the bathroom, then let’s get out of here."
"Please!" Scotty agreed.
Kevin walked away, and Scotty bent towards the trophy case. Next to his award, there was a framed copy of an article, written by Marie, about his victory and the scholarship he had been offered. Scotty shook his head. It felt like a lifetime ago.
"Scotty?"
He rose quickly and turned to the voice. He took a deep breath, which he exhaled slowly and ended with a short laugh.
"It’s not fair. I was promised you’d be fat and washed-up."
Brad stepped closer, giving him a small smile. "If it makes you feel better, I tore out my knee junior year and lost my scholarship."
Scotty shook his head. "Nah. That’s not good."
"Well. Keith’s 65 pounds overweight, Martin’s wife left him for an accountant, and Lewis still lives in his mother’s basement."
Scotty laughed, reaching a hand up to scratch at his eye. "Yeah. That makes me feel better."
Brad grinned, and Scotty suddenly felt 18 years old again.
"How are you?"
"Good. Great, actually," Scotty answered truthfully. "What about you?"
Brad looked away. "I’m doing OK. I came out about five years ago. That was pretty rough, but now I’m OK."
"Good. I’m glad."
Brad faced Scotty again. "I’m happy you’re here," he said quietly. "I’ve always wanted to apologize to you. I should have - I don’t know, I should have..."
Scotty waved his hand. "It’s in the past. And I’m the one who should be sorry. I...expected too much from you. It wasn’t my place to criticize you for not coming out or doing anything you weren’t ready for." Scotty shrugged. "We were both pretty young and stupid."
Brad gave him a tight smile, and they were silent for several beats.
"That man with you, he’s your boyfriend?"
Scotty held up his hand. "Husband, actually."
"Oh. Wow. Congratulations."
Scotty smiled. "Thanks. Are you seeing anyone?"
Brad shook his head. "Nothing serious. There is this guy."
"Uh-huh," Scotty said knowingly, and Brad blushed.
Footsteps sounded down the hall, and they both turned to face Kevin as he approached. Kevin raised his eyebrows at Scotty questioningly.
"Kevin - Brad Jenkins. My husband, Kevin Walker."
Kevin’s eyebrows rose even higher as he shook hands with Brad.
"Well, I’ll let you guys head out," Brad said. "Scotty, it was...nice to see you again."
"You too," Scotty said softly.
They watched Brad walk away, and then Kevin turned to Scotty. "Ready to go?"
Scotty sighed before facing Kevin. He smiled. "Yeah."

Scotty had always assumed he would leave again at some point, head for New York or Chicago or some other city. They had moved around too much when he was a child for him to ever feel comfortable staying in any one place for long. But the truth was, he loved L.A. It felt like he was finally home. Years passed, and he was still there. He had moved into a new place, but he still hung out with Jordan and the guys most weekends. They were as social as ever, but Scotty had started to mellow out. He had had a couple long-term relationships, even some with guys that were a little less...flamboyant. He still felt the most comfortable with guys his own age, though. Guys who weren’t afraid to be out there. He knew how to handle that, knew how to fit in with them.
At the moment, he was seeing a guy named Randy. They had only been on a couple dates. He was probably more similar to Scotty than any other guy he had dated since moving to L.A. Randy was obviously, openly gay, but he also preferred just hanging out - going to movies or out to dinner. Scotty liked him, liked that he didn’t have to bring out the attitude all the time. But, unfortunately, there wasn’t much spark. He kept trying, kept waiting for that rush of excitement low in his stomach, that anticipation that came from just talking with someone you knew you liked and who liked you back, that feeling where you needed to see the other person all the time and just hearing their name brought a smile to your face. Those moments never came, though, and he started coming up with excuses whenever Randy asked him out. He’d have to break it off with him eventually, he knew, but he didn’t want to hurt him, and he didn’t want to have to deal with that right now.
Because, right now, he was stressed out about something else entirely. His rent had been raised, and catering wasn’t bringing in enough money. Not to mention, there was a new jerk of a manager who often conveniently forgot to tell Scotty about extra shifts that were available. So, in his desperation, he started working as a temp receptionist for an insurance company. It was quite possibly the most boring job he ever worked at, and he had started listening in on the phone calls to entertain himself.
At first, it was the personal ones that he paid the most attention to. He would eavesdrop as salesmen made plans to meet women who were definitely not their wives. One of the executives was going through a messy divorce, and another one had a good-for-nothing kid who was always calling for bail money. But, after a while, Scotty started noticing something that was happening during the sales calls. Something wasn’t right.
Once he figured out what was going on, he wondered what he should do. If it had been rich, stupid people being swindled, he might not have cared that much. But these were little old people, using their life savings to buy insurance policies Scotty knew didn’t exist. Mario said he should just ignore it, that he didn’t know all the details and it wasn’t worth losing his job over. Jordan agreed that it sounded bad, but he didn’t know what Scotty could do about it. Scotty himself went back and forth on the matter, thinking about what he had heard until he felt sick to his stomach.
Finally, he called home. He tried to stay in touch with his parents, calling once or twice every couple months. His dad invited him home every third or fourth conversation, but if Scotty ever stepped foot in Oxford again, it would be too soon. They had never been to visit him either, and Scotty was actually glad of that. He didn’t really know how his mom would respond to his life in California. The month before, his dad had told him about a possible promotion with the company, one that would take them to Arizona. Scotty didn’t know what he thought about that. They’d be closer, but on the other hand...they’d be closer.
After a short, uncomfortable conversation with his mother, she handed the phone to his dad. Scotty explained what he had overheard. His father asked him a few questions and finally suggested Scotty tell someone. Since he didn’t know how high the corruption went, he’d have to go higher up, to the president or the regional office. Scotty hung up, relieved and resolved. And the next day, he made an appointment.
Things had become pretty wild, with salesmen put on suspension and attorneys subpoenaing records. Scotty had to give a deposition and today, he was meeting with a lawyer to discuss his testimony. He was absolutely terrified and beginning to regret ever having said anything. He sat in the lobby, trying to calm his nerves, but nothing was working.
The secretary walked over to him.
"Mr. Wandell? Sorry for the wait; Mr. Walker will see you now."
Scotty nodded and took a deep breath as he stood. As he followed her down the hall, he could hear Jordan’s voice in his head, telling him to work it. He smiled in amusement and released the breath he had been holding, reaching inside himself for confidence he didn’t feel.

"Ow! Damn it!" Kevin exclaimed as he fell over the top of the seat and landed in the back of the car.
"Are you OK?" Scotty asked in between laughs.
"Yeah," Kevin muttered. "But tell me again why we rented a compact."
"I didn’t think we’d need it for anything like this!" Scotty said as he followed his husband, squeezing in between the front seats of their small rental car.
Kevin grinned at Scotty when he finally sat down next to him. He leaned over and kissed Scotty softly. Scotty smiled and pulled him closer. The kisses became more heated, and Kevin lightly pushed Scotty backwards.
The back of his head slammed into the side of the car, and Scotty grunted.
"Are you hurt?" Kevin asked, pulling away.
"No, just - " Scotty scooted further down the seat. Kevin moved back to give him more room. He took off his jacket and bunched it up, putting it behind Scotty’s head as a pillow.
"How on earth did I use to do this in the cab of a truck?" Scotty asked in frustration.
"I have no idea what you’re talking about," Kevin murmured. "You were a virgin when we met."
Scotty tilted his head back, laughing loudly. "OK, sure."
Kevin smirked as he reached his hands down, unbuttoning Scotty’s pants and pulling them off his hips. Kevin shifted his weight on his knees as he tried to get Scotty’s pants completely off.
"Stop, stop, stop. Kevin, I don’t bend that way."
Kevin exhaled and moved off Scotty so he could lift his knees and push off his pants.
"Is it my fault you have the world’s longest legs?"
Scotty grinned as Kevin stretched back out on top of him. "You like my legs. Besides, this was your idea, so quit whining."
They finally found a good position, and soon the only noises in the car were soft moans, heavy breathing, and the sound of skin rubbing against skin. Kevin broke the kiss, contorting to nuzzle Scotty’s neck as he reached down to stroke him.
"So, do you have a letter jacket or something?" Kevin whispered.
"Mmm. Somewhere," Scotty softly replied.
"That is so hot."
Scotty laughed breathlessly, opening his eyes to look at Kevin in the dark. "Why is this such a big deal to you?"
"What? I married a jock!"
Scotty grinned and pulled Kevin close. "You’re so weird," he said, before closing the distance between their lips.
Except for a disastrous moment where Kevin dropped the lube beneath the passenger seat, things progressed quite nicely after that. Scotty moaned as Kevin entered him, sliding his hand along the back of the seat. He had one foot braced against the car door and the other wedged against the headrest of the front seat. Kevin barely had enough room to get any real force behind his movement, but it was working, and Scotty knew he wouldn’t last much longer.
Which, of course, was when there was a knock on the car. Someone shone a flashlight through the steamed-up windows.
"Shit. Shit!" Kevin said as he moved back from Scotty.
"Move it along!" the cop yelled.
"Ye - yes, sir!" Kevin called out. He looked back at Scotty, who was covering his face with his hands as he shook with silent laughter.

Kevin collapsed onto his back with a sigh. "Hotels, beds. This is much better."
Scotty smiled. Eyes still closed, he said, "It was fun, though."
"Fun? ‘Top Aide to Republican Senator in Mississippi Sex Scandal.’"
"I don’t think we rate a sex scandal."
Kevin grinned, turning to Scotty and wrapping an arm around him. "Maybe it was a little fun."
Scotty opened his eyes and turned on his side to face Kevin. "I’m just shocked. Do you have any idea how much sex I had on that road without ever getting caught?"
"I don’t want to hear about it."
Scotty smirked. "You’re so cute when you’re jealous."
Kevin scoffed. "Jealous? He was clearly getting a bald spot."
Scotty didn’t say anything as he raised a hand and ran it along Kevin’s hairline. Kevin, annoyed, reached up and brushed his hand away.
They were silent for a few minutes before Scotty said quietly, "Thank you for making me come."
Kevin grinned.
"That’s not what I meant, and you know it."
Kevin sighed, tightening his arm around Scotty as he turned serious. "You always make me face things I don’t want to. You get me to...open up and deal with things that are uncomfortable or painful. It’s helped - a lot, Scotty. How could I not try to do the same for you?"
Scotty leaned forward and kissed Kevin. "I love you."
"I love you too."
Scotty closed his eyes and snuggled into his pillow. "I can’t wait to get home," he said with a sigh.
