Oh the ramble we go off on in Psychology...
So, as a species, we're going to die out. Oh yes, "inevitably", I hear you grumble... well, maybe it's not as far off as you think...
It's no secret that altruism* is a gross myth. That we look for traitors, conspirers and enemies within our own ranks, and seek to eliminate them. But this could ultimately be our downfall.
Or, if you're inclined to take the road that's full of suspicion; this could be a cover-up. Yes, the idea of terrorism has been publicised greatly, especially since the events of 9/11, but is it over-hyped?
Beppe** has brought up the idea that the terrorist threat has simply been exaggerated as a means to impose social control upon the globe. By getting the British public, for example, to focus upon this supposedly "very real" threat rather than the state of our health service at present.
So, "it's not that bad", you say? At this very moment places like our own hospitals are breeding the next superbug. The last time one of these hit the globe, 50,000 lives were lost to it. This time? It's estimated to be at least double that. And worse news? It's strongly thought to occur in our lifetimes: within 10 years, to be precise.
Scientists predict that the source will be a string of bird 'flu. A mutated version of it, which will skip the boundaries between species (much like it did last time), and infect the human race: The ease of travel will only help the disease to spread and furthermore, a cure is proving impossible to find. Afterall, this new "bug" is breeding in an age where medicaine has become very advanced - this simply acts as a means for it to evolve to form a resistance to the modern medicine we posses, thus rendering our potential cures and/or preventatives useless.
Already, recently there was reportedly a case (*relies on her recall of what Beppe told her*) in the East where they suspected a number of birds of carrying this potential threat, so they destroyed all the birds. All of them - millions. I think that demonstrates how seriously this is being taken.
* Altruism = the act of selflessly helping someone. This doesn't exist - if you don't believe me then give examples and I can prove this to you.
** Beppe = really a Mister Steve Dudley, my Psychology teacher that closely resembles that Italian grease-monkey from EastEnders.
So, yes, a number of points there:
Is the human race self-destructive? Will it come to a point when our ultimate downfall lies in ourselves - in human nature? How big a potential threat is this idea of a biological weapon, inflicted upon us by the marrying of scientific progress and nature itself? Are issues such as terrorism exaggerated as a means of social control? Are they over-hyped as a means of covering up much more realistic threats to humanity? It should be noted that I don't expect people to contribute with masses of information and case studies here - I'm interested in anyone's opinions; thoughts; fears; suspicions; theories and beliefs on the matters raised. I'm looking for a bit of a discussion if anything. :)
So, yesh, anything?
