Doctor Who 4x01 Partners in Crime.
Well, it's back. I haven't been very bothered by DW returning, I admit. I didn't sit down to watch it and I actually forgot all about it until late last night when I remembered to grab the download. I wasn't even sure if I was going to watch it because I wanted to save it and watch it back to back with 4x02 in case this was crap and I lost all hope in the show.
But alas, Brian the Boyfriend was over and we decided to sit down and have a good old watch of the show that was basically the first big thing we shared in common. Only a couple of months after we started going out, series 2 started and Brian got me hooked. Remembering how squeeful I was over Tooth and Claw, and then how squeeful I was last year over Smith and Jones is weird, because now I look on DW as any other show I happen to like, rather than my absolute favourite as it used to be.
That thought in mind, Partners in Crime was good. I didn't let my irritation over the show at large and its self-worshipping head writer. The plot of the week was all right. I've lost all hope now that RTD will ever write an episode with serious, realistic sci-fi... or even sci-fi that isn't completely embarassing. He's now written the Adipose, the Slitheen, John Simm's cracked out Master and the Abzorbaloff... all of which I found mostly cringey, if I'm honest.
I found Donna fine. Entertaining, fun and nothing at all to complain about. I liked her in The Runaway Bride and she's just as good her. She shouts less, yeah, but that's not something I was irritated by in TRB anyway. The Doctor didn't even make me want to slap him into his next regeneration either. The annoying loudness and aren't-I-so-powerful stuff so prevalent in series 3 wasn't so obvious here.
The Martha mentions, the several Martha mentions actually, were nice for those of us who happened to like her, even count her as a favourite, and thought she deserved some kind of post-departure closure from the Doctor. I'm glad he mentioned thinking she was brilliant, that he agreed with Donna that having her around had toned down his homicidal tendencies, and most of all, something that I never really thought about - that he was responsible for ruining her life. I don't actually blame him for Martha's missing year. It was the Master's fault and Martha wanted to do it, she agreed to save the world, but it's nice the Doctor sees more now, sees how he acted. Though - was the 'she fancied me' comment needed?
Ah. Rose. Well, yeah I knew she was back like everyone basically, but her appearance in this was a shock to me. Not an unpleasant one though. I'm not bothered either way by Rose now, I don't despise her but I'm not jumping up and down either. I was intrigued by her appearance actually. I remember the pictures showing her in that oufit beside Ten lying on the pavement with an ambulance? Was that what she was looking at so sadly when Donna went up to her? A bit of crossing of the time lines there, with her ep 11 appearance crossing with what happens in ep 1? I for one look forward to seeing how the Rose storyline pans out, especially considering her popping up here. In a way, I'm annoyed at RTD, because he did it purely to grab people in rather for than any plot reason, I fear. But we'll see I guess.
7.5 / 10, I should think. I like Donna and Ten, and how she made clear she wanted to be with him for the travel, and not becaus she fancied him, and he the same. Ten talking to the big empty TARDIS, forgetting Martha wasn't there was a nice, poignant moment that I liked too. I'm feeling good about series 4. I hate the new theme and the super fast end credits though. Sucks ass. But yay... DW is back, and I'm looking forward to it. Not rabidly, but as a good show that I mostly like. I'm just going to avoid the wank and OMG Rose the One True Companion is Back crap, and I should be fine.
