Wow.
Last night and today I've pretty much been gobsmacked by the UNBELIEVABLE response I got to the latest chapter of "Suddenly I See" I posted last night. I can't even describe how much squeeing I did when review after review appeared in my inbox. Even though the Doctor didn't appear in the chapter once, you guys still liked the chapter and reviewed like crazy!!!
I had such a stupid day. Got up at 5.30 for the train so I could be in for a 9.00 lecture - it starts SNOWING and so the train sits on the tracks for an hour and a half and I miss the lecture I got up at the crack of dawn for. I was just in a murderous mood. Seeing the insane respone Suddenly got is such a cheerer-upper.
Something which also helps in the cheering up stakes is the Roswell Series 3 DVD I got today. Seriously I LOVE catching up on series that I know really well, but like, haven't seen all of. Angel for example, I'd only seen series 1 and 2, but during September and October I got series 3 - 5 and totally fell in love with it again. Series 4 was AMAZING. The best of all of them.
Anyway, so I'm one of my modules in English this semester is Medieval English. I thought, wow, great, that's so cool, we'll be learning about the era and Medieval writers etc. A Clue: NO. WE ARE READING MEDIEVAL ENGLISH. I have to study Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (and there are a lot of them), Beowulf and Sir Orfeo and Sir Launfal in the original Anglo-Saxon / Old English - WITHOUT TRANSLATION. And it ain't easy. At all.
Par example, a few lines for Sir Orfeo:
X "A, dame, ich biseche merci. Lete ben al this reweful cri."
X Wele y-armed al to rightes, And bad me comen an heighing."
X "Ac yete amiddes hem ful right, The quen was o-way y-tvight, With fairi forth y-nome."
YES. This is the English language you're reading people. And okay, I should stop whining because one you learn the spellings they use and the words in place of moderns one it's all pretty lyrical and flowy. When I first saw it all though I actually started laughing in disbelief. It all looked Latin or German at first glance. Now I am calm and sitting pretty reading Medieval English. Cool, no?
And I must apologise to the writers of Robin Hood, who I bashed so much for using such modern speech. Medieval speech is total gibberish to the untrained ear. Nevermind the spelling.
This was a long and boring post. Go! Go about your daily business and go do something fun and fandomy!!
