I make things way more complicated than they need to be sometimes. I've always known this, and lately I've been searching for the simple solutions. Why did I have four different email addresses? I only need two: one for work and one for my personal life. And that's what I'm working toward now - I started up a new GMail account that's going to be with me for a long, long time. And I'm in the process of shutting down my old personal email accounts.
I'm late to the party; it turns out GMail now supports IMAP (i.e. mail synching with a third party application) and so does Mozilla Thunderbird, my email client of choice. So I created this new one email address(to rule them all...?) and I've been sorting my old email and then moving it to the new address. Sure it might be easier to start fresh, but what can I say? I am, after all, a digital hoarder. :) Right now I'm moving almost 9,000 LiveJournal notification emails into my new GMail LiveJournal tag, which is what prompted me to make this post. 9,000!? Wow, the good ol' days! This import is a slow process, though - at the current rate, it'll take about 5 hours.
So yes, simplicity... I look for it everywhere now. Take my eyes, or rather, my contact lenses. They're two-week soft lenses and I have always had the worst time keeping track of when I'm supposed to switch them out. I used to write it down but that seemed excessive. I should be able to remember whether or not I've been wearing these lenses for two weeks! My new rule? I change lenses on the 1st of the month. And then again on the 16th. Yeah there will be a couple extra days here and there, but so what? They aren't going to kill me. This is the kind of thing I'm talking about. Just a simple little rule that makes life easier... I know that there are more out there; I've just got to keep looking.
