etiquette, napkins, confusion

I went to a nice restaurant* last night, along with another woman (D) and a man (F).  A (male) server assisted D, and then me, into our chairs, and then took the white folded napkin from in front of D, unfolded it, and placed it onto her lap.  He then walked over to me, picked up the napkin, and asked if I would prefer a black one to (and here I had trouble hearing him but I think he continued with) better go with my outfit.  WTF?  Anyone every heard of this before or know what/why?  Both D and I had dark pants on.  Admittedly, she was seated with her back to the wall, and mine was to the restaurant, so perhaps people passing by could see my lap more easily than hers, but still, I'm mystified.

*The Plumed Horse, in Saratoga.  We ordered three appetizers, three entrees, and two desserts for the table.  Super brief food report: Amuse Bouches: two were very tasty and interesting, two were interesting and good, one was hohum (yes, they gave us five each).  Appetizers: innovative and mostly tasty (mine was "Black pepper & Parmesan souffle, Dungeness crab, uni fondue "), but very very rich.  Entrees: a little on the boring side, but they get bonus points for actually delivering me a rack of rabbit (along with the liver, leg, and bacon wrapped loin).  No, you're not reading that incorrectly.  Pre-dessert bonus sorbet: yummy.  Desserts: one tasty, one meh. After dessert cookies: one tasty, one meh.
