This weekend my boyfriend and I, our two dogs and a group of his family went on a seventeen-mile canoe trip on the Current River in Shannon County, Missouri. I don't have any pictures of the actual canoe trip, which included Cave Spring and Welch Spring, because I couldn't find a waterproof camera before we left town, so under the cut are some pictures of the river, the campground and the surrounding streams.
My dog King, faithfully guarding our campsite. It rained three out of the three nights we were there, but I was so exhausted it didn't matter that the tent was a little damp inside.
Our dogs, King and Ybor, had the time of their lives playing in the river. Here's a picture of them running along the Current at Pulltite.
This is Sinking Creek, a beautiful, cold springfed creek that flows into the current. T and I and the cousins our age found this spot Saturday and spent the morning swimming, playing with the dogs, smoking and relaxing. The greener water is about six feet deep and so cold it's hard to get all the way in.
Another view of the rapids at Sinking Creek. Upstream, at a place called the Sinks, the creek actually goes through a hill and you can canoe or raft through a fifteen-foot tunnel. We discovered the Sinks is on private property though, so we didn't get to got through it; next time we're going to try to get permission from the landowner to check it out.
The river is spring fed, so it's very clear and really cold. At Cave Springs, the water is about 58F degrees. Here's my foot in water about up to my knees, showing how clean the water is. You can even see the fish and crawdads at the very bottom.
We were all exhausted by the end of the weekend. Here's Ybor, dripping wet with his ears drooping, ready to head home. We had the best time, and I can't wait to go back. In fact, mu boyfriend and I dream of moving there someday and spending our weekends lazily fishing and drinking beer in our canoe on the Current.
