If I'd met and gotten to know you before Kiefer (and ignoring the wanting-children thing, since I'm militantly childfree ;)), I'd totally have asked you out! =) You ARE attractive, fun, and refreshingly normal while still being interested in the furry scene - there really aren't enough folks like you in the fandom.
And frankly, your handling of things like politely asking the servers to hurry the heck up at Tony Roma's is seriously impressive to womenfolk. We like take-charge-yet-kind men like that, who can grab a situation and run with it without being all rude and overbearing. =D
As for the idea of being single being some sort of failure...Well, screw that!! I was REALLY happy being single, and tried very hard to get rid of Kiefer when we first met (he'll tell ya stories ;)). Being single is AWESOME - your schedule is your own, your life is your own, and everything you say, goes. You don't need another person to make your life complete - and if you do, IMHO, you ARE a failure.
Frankly, I view SOs as attractive accessories. ;) They're lovely to have around and can spice up an otherwise boring ensemble, but you've got to put the look together first...And if your look is good enough, you don't even need the accessory.
Do what makes YOU happy. If you want someone, do go look for them. If you don't really care to put up with that stress right now, don't worry about it. =)
...And I spent a year in Richmond, VA, where I got engaged to the child of local Xians (no idea what I was thinking) - my deepest sympathies. I know what those kind of folks are like. O.o
