This week, I learned that a Roman aristocrat's third name (cognomen) was actually a nickname, occasionally based on a physical attribute.
Which means that the history books, which generally refer to them by their cognomens (to avoid confusing all the Gaiuses and Marcuses) are actually full of the exploits of people called "Hairy", "Little Boots", "Cripple", "Lefty", and "Chickpea".
That would be Caesar, Caligula, Claudius, Scaevola and Cicero respectively.
The Caesar thing is kind of ironic, since the man was completely bald.
...I saw a picture the other day of either the pope or Cardinal Wolsey, and I swear, he was holding a cookie. So it got me thinking what kind of cookies I would make for the pope, were I called upon to do my duty to Mother Church.
I'm thinking oatmeal cookies in the shape of Jesus. With currants for eyes and raisons for stigmata.
...and as long as I'm going to hell, I ship Jeeves/Wooster. And I hate The Sound of Music.
That will be all. Go about your business.
dork-out time!
