Some years back, California passed Proposition 209, under which the state constitution prohibited state-sponsored preferential treatment based on race, sex, or ethnicity. This past year, the California Assembly passed ACA-7, which would authorize the governor to make exceptions to that prohibition for the purpose of "increasing the life expectancy of, improving educational outcomes for, or lifting out of poverty specific groups based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, or marginalized genders, sexes, or sexual orientations." That's so broad an exception you could navigate an aircraft carrier through it; there's pretty much no discriminatory policy you couldn't credit with doing one of those things. But I'm glad to see that the California Senate voted it down, apparently after hearing a lot from Asian parents who saw themselves and their children as directly targeted by ACA-7. Even California politics produces occasional good news. . . .
