I completely agree with everything you've said. Except that I'm a Jack/Kate fan and Sawyer/Juliet. And definitely not at all a Sawyer/Jack fan.
But as far as the actual series and the finale goes, I totally agree. FINALLY we agree on something! ;)
Although, I would venture to say that we did get all the answers. Maybe not the specifics of what the light really is and a lot of the mythology that goes along with it including how exactly The Man in Black (seriously, she never gave him a name? messed up) became the smoke monster and why smoke and all that, BUT I would say that we got the answers we've been searching for for 6 seasons.
We found out what the smoke monster is and how he came to be. We found out why they were brought to the island. We found out so much about Dharma and the Others and why they're drawn to the island. We even know where they all ended up.
Some might complain about not knowing how they ended up in what I would call purgatory, but who cares? Most likely it's what happens to everyone. You have to find your way through purgatory to find those that you love and who you knew at your happiest most "you" time of your life. I like to think Hurley and Ben might have facilitated a lot of this, but it could just be what happens. Closure and a happy ending without being unrealistic (as realistic as afterlife and purgatory can be to some people.) The whole episode when everyone was saying they need to leave or they'll see them there, I was so sure they were going back to the island. I still think they do. Not the island per se, but a heavenly construct of the island.
And you're right, that moment when Kate says she missed Jack was heartbreaking because she lived so much longer than him. And I love that Christian explains that some died before Jack, some long after (namely Hurley I would say since he's the protector of the island), but time has no meaning in eternity and purgatory, so to them they're all there at the same time just waiting to find each other.
The one weird thing--Juliet and Jack's son. Maybe just another link to help bring everyone together I guess, but it was a little random. Or maybe not. Maybe this is a copy of the world that they would have lived in if none of their parents or anyone had gone to the island.
There are just so many things that were perfect. Even Nadia. Assuming this is one cohesive world (not just alternate versions for everyone), we can say that she chose to spend eternity with Sayid's brother and her family. Daniel and Charlotte found each other, but don't see the Losties as part of their eternal existence.
I did think it was funny that it was all couples except Boone and Locke (and Christian of course.)
And Ben finally let go. After everything he's done to hold on to the island, he's decided to let go and spend eternity with Danielle and Alex. I assume Richard is with his wife, and as Harold said, Michael is still whispering on the island. And I can't tell you how glad I am that Rose and Bernard were there.
Oh, and I completely and totally agree with what some of the actors said about Lost in the series retrospective. This show will stand on its own for years to come. You hear about there being college courses devoted to a single television show (Buffy, Sopranos, etc), and I think this show is perfect for a collegiate course of study. I actually can't imagine a show ever surpassing the sheer brilliance of this show. The subtle reveals that came at the perfect time, the character study and development, the philosophy. Everything just came together perfectly.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, can we just deem JJ Abrams a genius and be done with it? I know Damon and Carlton were the hands-on people here, and they are brilliant as well, but between this show, the Star Trek movie, parts of Alias, and even Felicity, he's amazing. I heard somewhere that originally it was just gonna be a Castaway sort of thing, but then JJ came in and suggested they make the island a character and brought in a lot of the themes and the ideas and made it that much more interesting.
Ok, so I meant to answer this like a week ago, but then I got crazy busy with going back to work and such. Aye. BUT...
YAY!! We finally agree on something! I knew it had to happen eventually, XD
But yeah, I agree, the most important questions we needed answers for were about the characters, and we found out a lot else besides. The only real question I'd have liked answered was who built the statue and the temple, and when and why, exactly. And, who trapped the Man in Black in that house with the ring of ash, and lots of questions associated with that. (and that's interesting, the theory that she never gave him a name...everyone else I've talked to has assumed his name was just withheld from us to drive us crazy, but that'd be really interesting if he was never even given one! Hmm...) I mean, I'd like to know those things, but it absolutely wasn't necessary. I think most of us have been watching this show for so long mostly because of the deep, interesting characters. They mystery has been great, sure, but I think for the majority of the audience if it was just the mystique of it it'd have gotten old a long time ago.
I think purgatory's a nice thought in a way...a chance to sort of a few things out that you'd have liked to have gotten ironed out in your life. That's part of my theory on Jack and Juliet's son, too. I think for Jack, having a chance to be a father gave him the outlet he needed to work out the lingering issues from his fractured relationship with his own father. I think through making things start to work out with his own kid, he was able to get some closure on that whole mess.
Oh yes. Vincent should've totally been there. &hearts
This show really was just a work of art all to its own...I'm so glad to have been able to watch it nearly from the beginning. JJ Abrams is definitely a genius, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. (I've never watching Alias or Felicity, but I'm thinking I need to add those to my 'to watch' list.)
