Book Four

Uhtred is still trapped by his oaths to Alfred, however his old 'friend' Haesten sends him a message that the dead have a message for Uhtred. Skeptical, Uhtred goes to consult this messenger from beyond the grave, who tells him he will be King of Mercia. Torn between his oaths to a King he dislikes and the Fates that tell him he will be King, he allows Haesten to introduce his Norse allies Sigefrid and his brother Eric.

Wow. Even though this book was the fourth in the series, I did not feel lost at all. It explained everything to me and all the action, lies and drama kept me turning the pages. Though I must admit it took me a while to read it. My favorite character was Gisela, mostly because she kept her own opinions and still supported her husband, and she was smart. Uhtred was the ultimate badass to me, what with his pagan ways and subtle mocking of Christians. Every time he had a conversation with a priest it had me laughing. I don't usually read historical stuff but this book was pretty good. But be careful because it may take a while to finish. I recommend this book to anyone.

Book Five
Title: Survivor
Author: Chuck Palahniuk
My Rating: 4/5
Book: 5/50
Pages: 289 pgs
Total Pages Read: 1,556/15,000
Description:
A satire of commercial culture, it is the story of Tender Branson, a member of the Creedish Church, a death cult. In it, every member learns how to be a servant for the human race-most of them are butlers and maids-and fear most human pleasures. They await a sign from God to tell them to deliver themselves unto Him; that is, they must commit suicide.

The sign finally comes, and a good ten years later, Tender becomes the last surviving member of the cult. He is thrown into mainstream culture and becomes a personal icon for many people.

Chuck Palahniuk never fails to amaze me. I must admit this book didn’t pull me in like Fight Club did, but a few chapters into it I was hooked. I can’t really talk about one specific thing, because I’d end up rambling. The Creedish Cult was so horrific the way it went out, and he didn’t know what was right and wrong, and I guess he had weird feelings about it. Fertility, like all the girls in Palahniuk land, was a knock out, I couldn’t relate to her much, but I felt her. Adam, at first was a creep to me, but later on I felt so bad for him. The agent was obviously a metaphor used for showing us who don't know, how show business is, and its actually pretty disgusting. This book was well written and I loved it, not my favorite, but it’s up there. I highly recommend this book, Palahniuk fan or not.

Book Six
Title: Boy Meets Boy
Author: David Levithan
My Rating: 3/5
Book: 6/50
Pages: 185 pgs
Total Pages Read: 1,741/15,000
Description:
It is set in a gay-friendly small town in America, and describes a few weeks in the lives of a group of high school students. As the title suggests, the central story follows the standard romantic plotline usually known as "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl" except that the main characters are both boys, the narrator Paul and newcomer Noah.

This book was a nice thing to read about high school life and loves. I liked how the high school was sort of open to the drag queens and biker cheerleaders. The book was pretty predictable, but everything is predictable with comedic-romance novels. But it was nice to read a book without a million twists. Infinite Darlene was a riot and I loved her to bits! Like everyone, I started to really dislike Joni, but I didn’t really care about her much. Noah was likeable of course, Paul was adorable, and I really wished to read more about Tony. Either way this book was pretty ok. If you don’t like predictable books, you should step away from this one, but read it if you’re looking for a nice beach read.

Currently Reading: Rainbow Boys, by Alex Sanchez; and American Gods, by Neil Gaiman.
