With the funds provided both directly and indirectly from my good friends, I went to the Eye Doctor last Saturday (6/11/11).
On the very good news front: my eyes are in good health, and there are no problems with my retinas from my Type II diabetes.
On the bad news front, the full exam cost $105 (as noted in my
last post), which is $30 more than had been donated by friends.
On the slightly bad news front: it turns it that my prescription has changed from last year: my left eye is slightly better than before (from -3.50 to -3.00). It also turns out that my need for bifocals has become acute: I cannot read anything through my current lenses that is closer than about 18" from my eyes, and I cannot read anything without my glasses that is farther away than about 6", leaving a 1-foot blurred space in my vision. The doctor also gave me the adjustment needed for the bifocals (+1.75).
I'm very glad that milady wife (
fabricdragon) recommended having the eye exam first. I have thus been saved from wasting the good assistance of my friends from being spent uselessly on an out-of-date prescription.
That all being said...
I am back to where I started; that is, needing new glasses!
Since I now need bifocals (Argh! I'm getting old!), I'm starting a new chipin.com fundraising request. The glasses I need will now cost about $100 online, which is still drastically better than the $300 I'd have to pay in a brick-and-mortar store.
Anything you can contribute (yes, even $1) will help. I am running this until the middle of July in the hopes of being able to afford the bifocals by then.
Many thanks to all for your good wishes and support!
