Apparently School was out for the summer yesterday in my local park. Thousands of hysterical knee-highs took over the usually serene green as fervent dads lined up their young for cannonball runs on gleaming new bicycles, being only satisfied when their kid had managed a couple of yards without landing a ghastly slam. I sat having English Tea with heather in the dignified shade of a parasol, laughing at bossy moms and admiring the trend of mock outdoor-wear on thirty-something fathers. It is hard to find sympathy for anguished mothers when their little ones only want to eat sand. Is that so wrong?

THIS MORNING: After a swift cup of tea and dash up the alley (only to be used in emergencies), I arrived at the library only to realise that the fly-by-night cheapsters that run the IT department at my university haven't installed the necessary software up here. So you can see that the day began with good intentions. But now I'm travelling dusty bookshelves toying with Tsars and Herk Harvey and economic upturns. What fun I can have on my own!
