First off - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Now, I am one of those people who really liked the Gene Wilder original, so I went in sorta wary of this movie. But...this was really good. Johnny Depp actually wasn't annoying with that voice (probably because his hotness overwhelms any type of annoying characterization), the direction was fabulous (of course), the score was by Danny Elfman (I heart Danny Elfman), and Charlie Highmore is a kickass actor! There were a lot of parenthetical statements in that sentence. Oh, my only problem was that the climax was more of a speed bump than a peak. I was kinda waiting for it, and waiting for it, and it didn't exactly come (yes, I realize the innuendos you can take out of this). Was a bit disappointing, but the rest of a the movie was awesome. Go see it.
Then, I watched Cruel Intentions (finally!): Great acting, great story, fantastic direction and music, and collaboration between the two. Just...augh, Ryan Phillipe with his shirt off! What more could one ask for? Oh, Alix! When "Bittersweet Symphony" came on, I thought of you, and wanted to dance. Sigh. I miss Iowa already.
Lastly, I saw The Usual Suspects last night: Sooooo confusing, but once things start to unveil themselves, a very compelling story. Kevin Spacey - I've seen him in three movies, and I really need to see more of him. Plus, Benicio Del Toro had an incredibly fast accent. Oh Fenster, how unintelligible you are - really, it's very attractive. Oh, and there was a Baldwin - maybe Stephen? Whatever - it wasn't exactly Hunt for Red October Alec Baldwin. Anyway, it turned out that I had seen the end of the movie on TV, so I kinda figured out the Kaiser Soze part before the final twist (as did other people who had not seen the movie before). But it was an enjoyable viewing.
That's all I got for now. Full Iowa report when I...feel like it, I guess. I have pictures, but no scanner, so stop by, see the random shots of magnetic poetry.
Catch ya on the flip side.
