wakie-wakie

Today became one of those days where I thought there was going to be much more to do, but I suppose waking at 2:30pm, and not having class on Wednesdays, was sort of the collapse of anything valuable. However, do not note my sluggishness as evil yet because I attended the first GDSA (Graphic Design Student Association) meeting of the 2004 semester, and it was great.

Unpredictably, the guest speaker became one of the most inspiring illustrators I’ve met in recent memory (hold on, have I ever truly met an Illustrator? Hmm). Going to this meeting reminded me of a good year in my past where I went to Gainesville to see the eminent David Carson speak; I think some how that was a turning point for me because I found it to my interest that you could not only make people conceptually see your work but also create laughter by simply talking about the work. The gentleman today, Billy Davis, not only made me laugh but also made me reflect. I liked him so much that I asked the GDSA president if I could have the “bio” she read during the introduction (Davis prepared the bio himself because the GDSA people always seem to request it that way). He was shy right out of the gate but as the presentation progressed, he became more confident in himself and I think it had nothing really to do with the audience because most people are so unresponsive (why don’t people laugh at good jokes…biggest turn off in the girl sitting next to me, I swear… not one fucking smile…yuck). He was genuinely quirky and nerdy for the most part and that for some reason is such a humble attribute in people. I sometimes think that people who sound toO confidante where just let out of a local convention at the Holiday Inn and trying to push me into some pyramid scheme.

His best moment, amongst quite a few, came when he was showing “this picture”-- look at the girl turned to her left with black hair -well Davis nicely turns to one of the officers of GDSA and felt confident in telling her(by the way we all heard it in the room)…”oh yeah that girl was an inspiration from a porn I had seen.” He giggled to himseld and she gave him this weird look; I thought it was hilarious because he was being so genuine. He said it in the most un-dude way ever.

Oh well enough about him…just visit his site…it’s simple and you should read around because you’ll begin to understand his humor…it was indeed ingenious…. He "assumes the life of the unassuming."

oh his URL is the same as his slogan:

Billy Davis is one swell illustrator
