Natural Disasters
My daughter has survived both her first earthquake and first hurricane with great humor and a great learning experience. She was one of the fortunate ones who neither lost power nor suffered damage to her home. There was a tree that toppled in front of her apartment but that was it. In fact, after the fact, she has found both natural disasters to have been worth the experience, not that she'd like to repeat them....
As for me, I survived the first 3 days of students with little strife. Had 2 students attempting to represent their gang affiliations, and another who told me, "I've only been in school 3 days--I shouldn't have to have all these rules." And I have a blind student in my first period class. The challenge is going to be figuring out how to adapt my often visual lessons for him. I can't wing things this year, that's for sure....
