Dodgeball? Of all the things to do, I never thought I'd be in a place making that a requirement for a day. I'm quite glad that it never happened back home, either. I was good at avoiding Dudley when he wanted to play. Er, that was my cousin, but he was rather large and rather good at throwing things hard, if he could manage to aim. If he hadn't ( Read more... )

The 25th works for me, although... what time of day? If it's in the afternoon, I'll have to take a day off work, which is fine, I just think that customers need to be informed at least a week ahead of time.

...I feel that you probably know how I am about being idle, so to say that I understand would be putting it lightly.

I was thinking the afternoon. Something like that doesn't really have a place in the morning.

Have you looked into the clock, Hermione?

Afternoon it is, then. I'll just close shop up early.

I have, actually. Rather extensively, even if I haven't been done there to see it with my own eyes. Did you want a quick run-down on what I've found out so far?

All right.

I'd like that.

Is it difficult to get there? To see it?

Things we know about the clock:

  • It's very difficult to get to, being in one of the nastiest areas of the Underground and guarded by a fair number of beasts of all sorts, although people have managed in the past, and I feel that our skills with magic may be enough to get us pretty far. I'd only refrained from doing so earlier since... all things considered, it seemed pretty important to stay safe so that we'd be able to make it back to our world, whenever the deities saw fit.

  • The clock itself is protected behind a force field, which normally no one is able to penetrate. It prevents everyone from making direct contact with the clock, although one can get a pretty decent view from just behind it.

  • People who attempt to force themselves through the field often end up getting teleported to another part of the City, most often crashing into the City fountain. Some people have been punished for a lengthier amount of time, those similar to the punishments people receive for doing harm to the deity offices. No one has ever sustained ( ... )

I'd like to go, to see it. We can hold off creatures enough to get close, and I'd like to see what happens by touching it.

I wish we had more solid answers, and that the Deities would say something, but maybe we'll get their attention.

I don't like that we might be keeping worlds alive by being here. They should tell us these things.

By... touching it? The barrier, you mean? Because unless another curse occurs in which the City is stalled altogether, I don't know that it'll be so easy to come in contact with the clock itself. And going so deep in the Underground altogether, I... well, I once ventured largely on my own, for the very same reason--that I wanted to see the clock. Unfortunately, I didn't get too far.

The deities really have no reason to tell us the truth. They're amoral creatures at best, and the notion of keeping worlds alive by being here is honestly one that could just as well be a fabricated tale told just to make us worry.

You said that some people have ended up there, so why can't we?

I said a few people, certainly. Perhaps some who are better equipped than we are.

We have magic, and we've been through much more difficult things than this.

I think we can handle ourselves.

...others have magic too, Harry. And perhaps we've been through more difficult things, to be sure, but situations where we could definitively discern the intents of those involved. I'm not arguing that looking into the motives of the deities isn't a good idea, but where it should fall on our list of priorities is a concern that I do have to bring up. Even when Severus and Remus were here, their combined efforts didn't leave us with any more information.

But I suppose the act of venturing into the Underground itself isn't something I could ever keep you from attempting. There's just a line, and we need to be keeping a close eye out for it. When the risks outweigh possible gains.
