We posted this segment from Athie's book on The Whole Salamander's Facebook Page the other day. Obviously, I am not through with Facebook. Apparently, we have an on again / off again relationship.

During the holidays, we gathered at the house in the woods -- the house that inspired
Moondust. We are a 21-st century family, with healthy smatterings of Arab, African, Irish, Norwegian, Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, Catholic, Buddhist and agnostic. We come together from Norway, Ireland, Scotland, England, The Fertile Crescent, Eastern Russia, Zanzibar, Oman (distantly)... and we all get along. In a way, I count this as a miracle. At the same time, the United Nations character of my family seems a minor distraction compared to this news:
HEMLOCKS! Hemlocks are making their way back into this world, here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. When Athie Wolfe wrote
Moondust, it appeared that our great hemlock, so important to the entire Appalachian ecosystem, was done for. Now look who's sprouting up (lower right corner of photograph), right close to the house ... close enough so that, with just a few more feet of growth, the flying squirrel can sweep down to the porch and back without ever touching the ground.
