Rosie came to the back door and paused when she saw Jonna out washing his car. She was upset lately. Upset that all these people thought she was here for something, something material. All she did was watch as he took his time wiping down the windows. His shirt was off and it took some time for any thought to enter her mind that wasn’t attatched to the dirty admiration she had for his look in tight jeans and no shirt. He looked so good, always.

Leaning on the door frame she locked her gaze on the way he moved and the care he took when cleaning the automobile. All the questions and accusations were in her mind. Would she be here if he hadn’t wanted to be a professional soccer player? Would she be here if he didn’t want to be a professional race car driver? Would she be here if he wasn’t a rock ‘n’ roll singer? Would she be here if he wasn’t famous? Would she be here if he was a man who couldn’t get a job and she had to work to support them? Every answer was yes. She’d be here no matter what happened or what he did. She wanted to cry when she thought about how shallow others assumed she was. No one, or very few, thought she was here for the man, just the man and nothing he had. She appreciated and encouraged all of his accomplishments but that was not everything.

Rosie shifted. Her mind was back on the Geordie days when she first met Jonna. He barely had the money to eat and drive to the next show. That was the man she had fallen madly in love with. He was always broke, some times frustrated and on the verge of failure or maybe success. To Rosie, that was proof enough that his fame didn’t matter.

“Whatdya doin’?”

Jonna’s voice cleared her thoughts and started a smile. “Ain’t nothin’.”

She stepped down from the porch leaving her shoes behind. The grass was cool beneath her feet.

“Ya gonna help or watch?” He was teasing her. He never asked her to do much of anything but she always found ways to help out.

Rosie glanced down at the white sundress she wore and shrugged. “Can’t get this dress wet. Gonna haveta do it ‘lone.”

His grin when she looked up was enough to send her away running and laughing. He was about to do something. She could see it in his eyes. “Aye. Be revealing if it got wet.”

The words barely finished before he brought the hose up and squirted her. Rosie squealed from the cold water. She tried warding it off with her hands until it stopped.

Jonna was laughing at her. “Ya, always squealin’ when you get wet.”

The undeniably dirty nature of what he said caused Rosie to gasp before she narrowed her eyes. Jonna dropped the hose and took a step back. Rosie charged toward him and he went running. He didn’t make it past the back of the car before she had him around the waist.

“Ya let us go.”

Rosie laughed as she picked him up. She had it in for Jonna now and started carrying, half dragging him toward the pool.

“Rosie!” He saw what she was going to do. “Ya ain’t darin’”

Rosie threw him in the pool. His hat floated at the top but he was soon up grabbing at it.

“Ya little bitch!” Jonna was already swimming for the ladder.

Rosie giggled and started trying to find a place to get away. She wasn’t even sure getting away was what she wanted. Jonna was out of the water shaking off his wet hat.

“Got me hat wet.”

“Sorry darlin’.” She tried not to laugh.

“Gonna be a sorry girl.” He pulled the hat back on and started around the pool.

Rosie ran for the house. But the laughter kept her from getting too far too fast. This was what she loved. She loved living and she loved someone who had that same desire to just live. Rosie heard Jonna come in and ran out the front door. She’d get caught but this was fun.
