Charloft: S is for Skills
What abilities and skills does your character have?
Rosie has some skills but she is just a normal girl in most ways. She can work on cars and semi trucks because of her father. After working as a teenager she’s a good waitress and bartender. She worked a truck stop diner/motel/bar in the Tallahassee area for several years. She’s also not bad at singing or design after being in college for it over a year. She’s very bad at playing guitar but tries much to the annoyance and amusement of those teaching her. Slowly she’s learning about stage pyrotechnics but doesn’t have enough skills with them to wire them alone. Rosie loves to swim and is very good at it because she grew up near the ocean. She can ride a motorcycle, drive a limo and a tour bus and knows how to manage a sail boat. Rosie had to take on a lot of her own care and so she is self sufficient. She knows how to take care of herself in most situations. After traveling most of the world chasing after AC/DC she knows how to book flights, hotel and take care of all sorts of travel related problems. She could be a travel agent by this point in her life. Rosie has a great sense of fashion and ability to do hair, nails, make-up and dress to flatter her figure.
All those skills are minor. Rosie’s main skills are social. She is very outgoing and extroverted. Her ability to project her playful confidence to others is one of her greatest talents. She can cheer up others just with her presence because she is so bubbly. She’s sensual and can easily seduce others with her personality or if they are into her body type her physical side. She’s good at making friends. She’s good at blending in or being the center of attention. She can get the attention of others and hold it very easily. She has the type of powerful charisma that one would expect from an actor or someone with stage presence. People tend to get caught up in her free-spiritedness and desire to have fun with life. Rosie is diplomatic and rarely has a temper even when confronted. She can understand several of the English dialects as well as speak the northern Tyneside varieties as if they are her own.
Rosie is unstoppable in bed. She’s very well versed in pleasing a man and perhaps women (I haven’t explored that yet nor has the muse revealed anything about this yet). Those who have had the pleasure of spending a night with her don’t forget her or her skills.
How do you get these skills/abilities across when roleplaying or writing for said character?
Few ask about her skills so most others don’t know about what she can do. However her social skills come off clearly in interactions. She always tries to speak of problems as something that can be solved or overcome. Rosie always appears to well put together and dresses well. She’s physical when she’s around people. Her first reaction to meeting an acquaintance or friend is a hug and a kiss on the cheek. She flirts unabashedly and wears revealing clothes. Though this isn’t her skill per say it is the outward show of her sexual side. Her sexuality and competence at sexual activity isn’t something that is directly played out though she will at times talk about it. The way this is shown in play is the fact that she has a rock star who could have his pick of girls that keeps coming back to her. Perhaps it is her personality but when she tells people about the song or should they ever listen to it something completely different comes across.
How well do you think you do at this portrayal? How might you improve?
I haven’t got this far with Rosie. I’m still feeling out who she should be though I have her personality down. I think the bubbly, sexy, voluptuous southern girl fits the song perfectly (since the song is her canon of sorts). I also think my choice of PB has made her much clearer, to me if no one else. I know I really need to flesh out her past. I want to write about her childhood, her parents and such. That will of course improve her and round her out. Things are slow of course with a new character. I’m sure there will be a lot of improvements to her over the next months.
