Is it normal for people to plan things in advance for the holiday? It seems like that's all everyone's talking about now. That and the missing trousers and skirts, but... I don't get it, what's the big deal?

Planning things in advance is essential to any successful operation. There is an order of operations when it comes to all formulas; skipping the first step is akin to building a house with no foundation.
