ROFL! Please don't take that video as an indication of mainstream entertainment in Australia!
Noel Crombie is/was part of an alternative|progrock band called Split Enz. He played drums and percussion, as well as doing most of the costuming and stage sets for the band.
The whole spoons thing originated when the band realised they couldn't take their tap-dancing auntie on tour and needed something to fill the gap - Noel suggested spoons and it went on to be a bit of a trademark for the band.
While Split Enz (or The Enz as they're often called) broke up in 1983/4 they graced Australian stages once again this year in their spectacular 2006 Reunion Tour (click the enz 2006 tag on this entry to read more about the concerts I went to).
I'm a member of the Frenz of the Enz, the official Enz fanclub, which unlike other fanclubs actually includes letters from the band and other bits and pieces not made public. As such, I entered a fanclub auction a few weeks ago and won a couple of items, Noel's 2006 spoons among them.
The Enz are one in a million - quirky, musically way ahead of their time ... and just downright fun!
Leg-warmers, that awful layered hair-do that I had which took me an hour to curl and fluff in the AM only to have it go flat by noon, mini-skirts, jelly shoes, and like ohmigawd!!, Valley-speak. Yeah. Good times. ;)
All skate, reverse! I miss rollerskating. I was 12 in '84. Nowadays you can't buy regular rollerskates. They're all inline skates and I haven't quite figured out how to effectively stop with them.
I couldn't stop quickly with normal skates, but I sure as hell can't stop with inline skates! I nearly killed myself last year proving that, lol. I'm sure we can still find them in Oz ... mostly at specialist skate shops that cater for skateboarders and such.
