So much for a fun summer:
So here's the story. This is gonna be like a book:
Monday I went to watch Torrey have her riding lesson and then drive her to her vaulting lesson at Karina's barn. Her trainer offered to have me ride a cute little Arab pony named Tango. I said why not (I almost never refuse a ride hehe) and everything was going well. Once I got the feel of him I really liked him. Lori said I looked really good on him. Well we were jumping some little crossrails and over our 6th or 7th jump together he landed, put his head between his knees and bucked. I tried to grab onto his neck but unfortunately it was very short (arab neck) and I ended up landing on my feet. Since I'm used to bailing off horses that are 16hh and taller I hadn't completely unfolded all the way and landed fine on one foot and then I landed on the ankle of my other foot. I felt it pop out. So I layed on the ground for a while and then Lori loaded me into her minivan and we went to this cute little hospital in the middle of nowhere.
So I got there and thank god I was wearing my zip up half chaps (I almost wore tallboots, the doctor said if I had that the bone would have likely went through the skin) and they took everything off. The nurse told me not to look at it. So I got an IV and laid there for a while. Thank god for morphine ;) The doctor came in to check me out and also made a very interesting expression when he looked at it and then also told me not to look at it. So I didn't for a while. I went into x-ray and snuck a peak at it. Basically my right foot was turned left and my ankle was going to the right and it looked like a softball was growing out the side of my foot. So I broke this bone called the talus, that is the bone that holds your two other leg bones onto the ankle. Sooo I split that bone in half, and then everything else in there dislocated. My insurance would not cover the hospital I was at so I had to be transferred via ambulance to a hospital that is right near my house (I was about 45 mins away).
I get to the new hospital and they can't find my xrays so I went to get new ones (ahh the pain was terrible). Then I sat in ER for a while. They decided they wanted to do a think called concious sedation and try to pop everything back into place. So they told me that I wouldn't remember or feel anything and that I would just sit there while they did everything and not remember anything. Well they lied. I screamed through the entire process (my mom could here it from all the way down the big hospital hallway and it still bothers her) and I do remember bits and pieces of it. Needless to say the hospital has apologized to me profusely. I guess they did a good job though since everything was back where it was supposed to be. I finally got to me hospital room around midnight and was able to try and sleep a bit. My roommates mom snored worse than anyone I've ever met in my life. I slept since the morphine made me sleepy but my poor mommy didn't get much sleep.
The next day I slept pretty much all day since I wasn't allowed to eat anything until after surgery. I believe my surgery was around 2 or 3 o'clock. It took about 2 hours. I know have some pins in my ankle. When they went in they realized that I had also torn lots of cartiledge, which isn't a good think. That will make recovery very hard.
I got moved to a new room that night because my mom didn't want me to loose sleep from the other roommates mom. I had my new room all to myself. I slept well since the anethesia was still wearing off. But once the pain kicked in I wanted to cut my leg off! Wednesday was a very painful day. The ankle itself was starting to feel a bit better but the pain would come in strong every couple hours. I also began having very very strong muscle spasms in my leg. They started giving me valume to stop those and now that gives me really really bad nightmares. So I hate taking it but I kind of have to. The doctors wanted me to start getting off IV medication so that I could go home Wednesday night and they started giving me pain pills instead. Those work pretty well (codine). I had to do a little physical therapy on Wednesday afternoon and sucked big time. They needed me to get up on crutches and move myself around a bit. I did okay but I cried a lot and it hurt terribly. I also got a new roommate on Wednesday, the poor girl was there getting chemotherapy :( Her and her family were very nice. She was throwing up so much after the chemo so I had to try and sleep a lot in order to not throw up also.
Thursday started off terrible. I woke up with bad spasms, the pain medication was not working fast enough and I had a bit of a fever. When the girls came to help me to the bathroom I stood up and guess what? I started my period! Can things get any worse? Ladies, if you ever have to go to the hospital for a few days bring your own pads/tampons because you NEVER want to use the hospital ones. That was a big episode trying to go to the bathroom, clean up the blood and handle the pain. Then they made me sit in my chair and whatnot so they could change my bed. Those chairs aren't the comfiest. Once I got into the chair and finally got comfy my breakfast came. I was all excited to eat because I was starving, just as I got ready to start the PT lady came again and said we had to do all the PT stuff right then. So I had to get up AGAIN, crutch down this huge long hallway, then turn and go down another one. Then she let me sit and rest in the PT room for a few minutes. Then I had to practice crutching up and down stairs a bunch of times. That hurt so much! Then I got to crutch back!
I can't put weight on my ankle for 2 months at the least.
So Thursday around 5 I started getting ready to come home. I got home and comfy and had some taco bell (ahh something other than hospital food). It's the last junky food I'm allowed to have for a few months since I have no way to exercise. But that's okay! I love chicken and salad and all that stuff.
The last few days at home have been okay. I pretty much just sleep and watch some TV. Finally I was able to get enough strengh to make it over to the computer. Hopefully now I can go on every day.
Thank you Corto, Krissy, Erin, Kimmy and Alicia for coming to visit today! And of course to Brandon for taking such good care of me!
