Summary: The whole story in full has to do with John and Keith's forbidden relationship because it's the middle ages and everything is centered around the church, not to mention that Keith is a serf for the slightly sketchy Lord Townshend and John is sort of being... held captive? IN THIS CHAPTER STUFF HAPPENS THOUGH, I mean an event takes place - they eat. it's cute, whatever

John lead the boy down the dark stairwell. Keith was terrified, this one was much smaller than the one he'd gone up to get to the chamber. The knight kept strong hands on the boy's small shoulders, letting him know that he was right there.
Keith flinched whenever he heard the smallest sound and would stop walking so John would bump into him.
"You have to stop doing that." John would plead
"But what if Townshend is coming after us?" Keith would back into John further.
"He is not coming after us," John would nudge the boy so he'd keep going, but, of course the whole thing would happen over again until on about the second flight of steps Keith stopped very suddenly and John bumped into him rather hard. Keith felt something hit against his bum and yelped. "WHAT WAS THAT?"
"HUSH!" John whispered harshly in Keith's ear.
"What was that?" Keith asked, whispering this time.
"Dear God, help me" John prayed.
"What?"
"Nothing"
"What is that poking against me bum?"
"It is nothing" John lied.
"I think it's something."
"It is nothing, Keith, now go."
Keith rubbed his bum against the object and laughed.
"Bloody hell, Keith, stop that!" John yelled, nearly pushing the boy forward but catching him before he fell. The knight pulled Keith close, making sure he was alright. But in the process John fell backwards and his arse hit one of the hard stone steps "OH FUCK"
The sudden movement and foul words all happening at once frightened the boy and, while sitting on John's lap he began to cry, leaving the Knight with no choice but to comfort him and make it better before they were to go down and meet Townshend.
"Shush, dear, it will all be alright." John said in a soothing voice and Keith ceased his crying, leaning his head on the knight's shoulder.
The knight wrapped his arms round the boy and hummed in his ear. Keith wrapped his arms round John and sniffled.
John hoped the boy's face was less red than before and asked if he would like to sit up now. Keith shook his head and sniffled into John's shoulder once more.
The two men sat there just holding each other for a while when John finally figured they should get going and instructed Keith to get up which he did. "C'mon, we have got to go."
The two scurried down the stairs to the private hall where they met the lord.

"Nice of you two to arrive." Townshend said, standing at the end of the table.
The two sat down. "It was kind of you to invite us, m'lord." John said respectfully.
Keith nodded along with him.
"The cook has prepared a fine dinner for you two, sausages ground from our healthiest beef." The lord snapped his long, slender fingers and out came three servants, each one carrying a plate of food. One plate was laid before the lord and the other two before John and Keith.
"I must ask... Why did you invite us to a private dinner?" John implored, moving the sausage around with his fork.
John could tell Townshend was about to lie. A smile spread across his face. "Must I have a reason?"
"Yes."
"We don't have many knights around here, as you can tell... and I thought, maybe you could do the protecting" The lord leaned across the table, lying further. Was he... flirting with John?
Keith's brow furrowed, seeing elbows on the table.
"I will have to be going soon," John stated and suddenly Keith's heart sank. He realised that this new friend of his would be leaving and this whole new life of his would vanish. He wanted to burst into tears right there and throw his arms around the knight but he knew he couldn't.
"I can't allow that, you see, --" Townshend paused. "Someone take the peasant boy out of here."
Keith looked at John, a very frightened expression on his face.
"No, he can stay. He is with me, what I hear, he hears." John said, glaring at the lord.
"Alright, alright.." The lord began, "I have a bit of.. um, business to attend, you see, I am completely out of money but not out of land. There is another lord not far from here who desires my land and will pay a large sum of money for it. But my villagers," The lord gestured to Keith, "They love my- I mean their land... And I could never let this far away lord make them so very unhappy..."
"So you expect me to steal money for you?" John interrupted, Keith was shocked by his manners.
"No, I expect you to convince the people that nothing is happening so I can sell the land and get the hell out of here" The lord corrected and Keith was even more shocked. He kicked John's foot.
John's eyes widened at the sudden feeling of Keith's foot jabbing his ankle and looked over.
Keith could do nothing but stare back, frightened.

series, john/keith
