Rare Ships Month: Rose/Master

It's Rose/Master day!

When I saw the post advertising Rare Ships Month, I immediately had two thoughts. The first was Tosh/Ten, but as there seem to be about 3 people in the whole universe who ship that, I decide to go with my beloved Rose/Master. A rare pair, certainly, but there's still enough out there to sink your teeth in to .

Sure, it's unhealthy, but that's what makes it so fun.

Okay, so they've never actually been on the show together, but that doesn't stop me. While I'll happy read Rose/Master fic of any stripe, I'll admit that the pairing didn't really occur to me until Simm!Master in season 3. This remains my favorite incarnation of the pairing. I think it's because it's the portrayal of the Master that I associate with the 10th Doctor.

It's a twisted pair of course, but for me, that's where the appeal is. This is not a relationship of puppies and rainbows. Revenge, lust, power games...there's a good reason that most of the Rose/Master fic out there is dark fic.

Many of the Rose/Master 'shippers I've met (myself included) are Rose/Doctor fans. It seems a contrast in some ways, but I think it actually makes quite bit of sense. Everyone can agree that the Doctor cares for Rose, after all she was his Companion. But if you believe he loves Rose, she suddenly becomes an extremely attractive target for the Master. How better to hurt the Doctor than through the woman he loved and lost.

But I don't want it to seem like the Doctor getting hurt is the main appeal of the ship. He may be part of the equation, but at the end of the day, it's Rose and the Master themselves that make the pairing so attractive. Rose in an emotionally vulnerable young woman in a lot of ways (probably more so directly post-Doomsday), she could prove easy for the Master to manipulate....At least at first. Because Rose is easy to underestimate. She has a core of steel running through her and woe be it to anyone who hurts her (especially if it's in order to hurt the Doctor). She may seem like easy-pickings but in the end I think he'd find what he enjoys most: a challenge.

"Healing the Wolf" by shadow_in_eden rated: Adult. In an AU where the Doctor never contacted Rose post-Doomsday, an intrigued Harold Saxon plays the part of a saviour. (WIP)

"Do I Twist, Do I Fold" by rosa_acicularis rated: R. Very dark story. Rose has a run-in with a certain Time Lord when out on an errand. (Complete)

Here is a listing of Rose/Master fic. It was created in January, so it's out-dated, but still well worth a look.
