And the moment you've all been waiting for . . . !
Well, okay, perhaps not. But here's the first part of my Tegan/Turlough rare pairings post!
Rare Ships: Tegan/Turlough:
I suppose I'm a bit lucky in that, as rare as this pairing is, they travel together in canon for quite some time! Which makes it a lot easier to pair them than some of the others posted this month. (Although it makes it all the sadder that there aren't more fics and art for them.)
Anyway.
Meet Tegan:
Tegan's first serial is "Logopolis." She's an airhostess from Australia who winds up traveling with the Doctor by accidentially wandering into his TARDIS thinking it's a real Police Box. He has a bit of trouble getting her home again, and by the time he manages it, she decides she wants to stay a while. She starts travelling with the Fourth Doctor, Adric and Nyssa originally, but before long it's the Fifth Doctor, Adric and Nyssa, and then just the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa. Then Turlough appears.
Meet Turlough:
Turlough's first serial is "Mawdryn Undead." He's a ginger schoolboy with funny eyebrows and a skinny little suit, who may or may not be older than he seems. He shows up with the expressed intention of killing the Doctor, and Tegan immediately mistrusts him. They don't get along well at all. Unfortunately for Tegan, he's not going anywhere.
In their second serial together, Nyssa decides to depart the TARDIS, leaving Turlough alone with Tegan for the rest of her run.
But what it run it is! Not only does beige Five get a bit darker in his third season, both Tegan and Turlough step it up too. Turlough definitely gets some great character development by the end of his run, and Tegan changes rather a lot too:
Now, some people might be put off by their bickering and mistrust of each other, but viewers with sharp eyes will see how that relationship changes over the course of the series. Turlough gradually becomes less selfish and there are several momenst where his concern for Tegan far outshines his concern for the Doctor--or even himself.
In the end, it's their fiery tempers and unlikely status that intrigues me. They're thrust together by fate and become friends of circumstance. But after all that, a real mutual caring develops between them (and between the Doctor). By the time they go their separate ways, you really get the sense that they will miss each other.
Many people only have exposure to this pairing via "The Five Doctors."
This is a shame because, although the opening of that serial is quite cute for them, they don't spent a lot of time together in it, and it is still relatively early on in their relationship, before they've formed their unnatural little friendship bond. Serials I recommend for them would be Frontios and Resurrection of the Daleks, though, like any good shipper, you'll find moments in any serial you watch. (With the popularity of Five/Tegan and Five/Turlough, they also tend to make a great OT3, but that's for someone else to expound on.)
Now here's a little picspam:
And these are all from Resurrection of the Daleks:
Intrigued? Please? Then climb on board the Tegan/Turlough express. I don't think it will disappoint at all! :D And let's move
on to Part Two!
